WINNER: After much deliberation and research for a quality humidifier, I took function over form in this model and am very glad I did. Some reviews commented on the "tacky plastic" housing but I didn't think it an issue. If anything, it helps with the weight of the item and it's easy to keep clean.PERFORMANCE: The 2 fan speeds are just right. I turn it on high @ night to do most of it's work and on low and comfortable setting during the day. The low fan setting is whisper quiet. I have it in my living room and don't need to elevate the TV volume at all!
SET-UP: EASY! Just read the directions! Not as much space needed a I thought.
Added bonus: No distilled or soft water required. Not a luxury I have in my home so this unit wins again.
EASE OF USE: If you don't think this is the simplest and most efficient investment then I wish you luck on your humidifier endeavors. It doesn't have all the "bells and moderns whistles" of some models, but I also don't have to fuss or worry about maintenance, refilling, or cleaning challenges. Tried and true model.

It works in large spaces we have almost 2000 sq ft (one level). It is loud if you turn it on full blast. We turn it on when we are asleep or gone for errands and then turn it off. The large water container is awesome. We fill it about once a week and keep our house between 35 and 45 humidity. We also live in the desert. I highly recommend it. It is large -comparable to a small coffee table. If you want something with little maintenance and works in large spaces this is it. If you have a smaller space and want it to be quiet this is not it.Want Essick Air 427-300 2-Speed Evaporative Console Humidifier and Air Cleaner Discount?
Received this product, set it up and the humidity level knob wasn't working correctly, it was put on at the manufacturer incorrectly, which is no fault of Amazon, just got a lemon. So I decided instead of contacting Amazon, to contact Essick Air and they sent a replacement motor section.
Essick Air was very helpful and eager to assist.
Received new motor and set humidifier up again. After the first bottle ran out and was filled again, noticed it was running continuously, checked the water bottles and both were bone dry and so was the wick.
The empty bottle indicator lights did not come on, so not sure how long the unit ran without having water in the bottles or the wick.
I now just make sure to check the bottles every other day to ensure they have water in them.
I had the same brand unit for approximately 15+ years prior to purchasing this one and I can say that the craftmanship of this cabinet and all components fitting correctly has depleted.
Again, this is no fault of Amazon.
Other than what I have stated, it does do the job of putting humidity into the house. Just wish now, that I had contacted Amazon and requested to return this unit and have another sent.

pureguardian H2000 100-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier

This brings me to the Germ Guardian H-2000. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier that isn't fit for the trash, you have to pay more than $100. This H-2000 seems to be well-made. Happily, you can set it directly on the floor if you like. I have run it for days sitting on hardwood, and the floor is not even damp. There are little compartments for storing the power cord and for the air filter. A small brush is provided for cleaning the inside of the unit, though I don't know what use it would be. The humidifier barely makes a sound. The controls are straightforward. You choose cool or warm mist, then turn the humidity dial to the level of output you desire. A blue LED lights when the power is on, and a red LED indicates when the tank needs refilling. I've never had any trouble with white dust from this humidifier.
On the downside, the 1.4 gallon tank has a handle only on top, so it is difficult to balance the tank to fill it from the bottom. It's also rounded on top, so you can't set the tank down to fill it either. Remember the days when all humidifier tanks were flat on both ends and had a handle on each for ease of filling? No more. Usually ultrasonic humidifiers are easy to clean if they should mold, because all the innards are exposed. But the H-2000 has an optional warm mist, so water passes through a concealed channel as it goes from the tank to the vibrating disc, where it is presumably exposed to heating coils. You could run ammonia through the channel to kill mold, but there would be no way to remove slime. The tank is infused with silver nanoparticles to retard microbe growth, but machine's body isn't. Strange, because mold growth in humidifiers never starts in the tank. The on/off knob would benefit from some ridges. It's so smooth that I can't grip it unless my hands are perfectly dry.
The Germ Guardian H-2000 takes 30 hours to empty the 1.4 gallon tank with the humidifier set on its highest output. That's an output of 0.047 gallons of water per hour. My evaporative humidifiers put 0.083 gallons per hour into the air, nearly twice as much. For this reason, the H-2000 is best suited to a small bedroom, placed close to the bed. In the "warm" mode, the water is heated to 80 degrees F. The mist is warm in the base, the column (spout guide), and where it comes out of the spout. But by the time it gets a couple of inches from the machine, the mist is cool. So I see little point in the warm mist feature. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier, I won't try to dissuade you from this one. In spite of its deficiencies, it's the best one I've found in recent years. But it's only suitable for small rooms. First, let me say that mirasreviews review was extremely accurate. With that said, I give this machine 3 stars because there is no warm mist. As already mentioned, by the time the mist is one inch away from the machine it is cold, so, what's the point? Basically, this is a cold mist machine, and you should know that before you buy it. If you have anything within a foot of the spray, it will get soaked, especially if if you have selected the max setting. The directional spray is pretty good, however, I find it works best if the machine is a couple of feet off of the ground. It does not seem to force the humidified air far enough, so I set it on a table, and that does the trick. So far, we have not had any puddles or leaks of any kind. It is very quiet. Water capacity is good at 1.4 gallons, and does run for a long time if it is not on its maximum setting. We bought this because my daughter has croup and our pediatrician recommended trying a dehumidifier. We bought this one without much recommendation, mostly because the others (evaporative) we had broke. We have not had to give our daughter any of the steroid the doctor had prescribed, and she seems to be getting better (though we also let the steam build up with a hot shower running, and stay with her in there for 10-20 minutes). I do think this machine helps. My main reasons for only three stars are the lack of a true warm mist and the price. Oh, I should also note that it starts right away, no waiting. If I could, I would give it 3.5 stars. Again, I have to agree with another review, this is probably the best out there. I am satisfied (I have not been able to say that about other brands), however, I am not thrilled.

I have asthma and allergies and have been looking high and low for a humidifier that does not breed mold, as so many of them do. So I splurged on this expensive digital model. I also wanted a reliable humidifier for my toddler's room, in order to prevent wintertime coughs and colds.Unfortunately, this humidifier is a great disappointment. It does not live up to its claims of being mold-free; quite to the contrary, the long air passage tube grew reddish mold very quickly. Water also inexplicably collects in the bottom white basin. I called the company to resolve the numerous problems with the humidifier, yet they did not give me satisfactory explanations (e.g., they told me that the water collection is normal, yet why should water collect in the basin of the humidifier? Isn't that a prescription for mold growth?) Plus, as a previous poster noted, the screw holding one of the major components quickly rusted. I wish I had not spent so much money on this humidifier. I have returned to using the Vicks Warm Mist humidifier, which I used last winter and really liked, and only costs around $40.

I bought this humidifier on Dec 1st. I wanted to use it for a while before doing a review. I swear I have no connection to the company that makes this or any retailer. My glowing review is simply because it has turned out to be an excellent buy.Note, I see that the reviews so far for the digital model of this humidifier are not good. Apparently the humidity sensor? isn't working properly. My unit is the manual one, does not have any sensor. I stand by my review of this unit only. Sorry this is so long.
I have purchased and used a number of other small humidifiers over the years because I suffer from significant RA dryness symptoms. I have to say that this is the best humidifier I have ever had, bar none. I use this in my bedroom at night and my dry eye and skin problems lessened immediately upon first use and the benefit continues through an unusually cold winter. I also notice that I have been sleeping much better!
Besides the health benefits, another big plus is the almost silent operation. Each of the other units I had made loud misting noises and even worse, produced a persistent metallic pinging noise. Some caused chest congestion. I have had only very minimal temporary chest congestion with this and that may have been due to other things than this unit.
I have not used the warm water setting since that would make my room warmer than I like.
PROS:
Almost silent.
Simple to use: no complicated bits to micro-mist the water. Very well made. The cover doors to the compartments on each side are precisely fitted. The tank lid is water tight but still easy to unscrew. Simple parts fit together easily and are easy to clean.
Light weight.
Simple carry handle on tank works well.
Excellent humidity level even at below medium setting with no noticeable residue or dampness to any nearby surfaces.
Needs weekly drain and wash as indicated in instructions; a check of the small metal ionizing(?) plate and that's it. I do have municipal water. Well water would probably require more cleaning.
The anti-microbial feature was a selling point. I have no way to know if it's working, but the unit does seem to stay much cleaner than previously owned units.
I fill the tank about half full and that lasts me for almost a week.
There is no leakage whatsoever.
I like the units' sort-of art deco style a lot. All the other units I've owned were stodgy and unimaginative. This one reminds me of an old radio.
CONS:
The bright blue lights. I taped a piece of cardboard over so I can see just enough of the low-water light. I also placed the unit across the room because of the light problem. (Are engineers sparkly light fetishists? Many small appliances have these light problems. ;))
Price is high, but well worth it for the benefits in my opinion.
The tiny metal plate in the base below the spray tower appears to be rusty and has left a rusty residue on a q-tip. I don't know if this is from rust or water deposits. This plate cannot be removed or even looked at closely so I don't know if this is a problem or not. Doesn't appear to affect use at this time.
The manual was rather poorly written. There were parts mentioned that were not illustrated. I owned it for a month before I found where the cleaning brush was. Note, there are compartments with removable lids on either side of the unit under the water tank.
Doesn't hold all that much water for anyone wanting to leave it on all the time at a high setting.
Have to take a little care when removing tank not to spill any accumulated water from inside main unit or pull the tower misting part out with it. Not a big deal.
Does *require* cleaning at least once a week, especially around the metal plate or it won't mist.
Tank is a little unwieldy when upside down to fill. It does not sit flat due to built-in handle. Have to finagle getting it under the tap. Sometimes water gets into bottom sections and has to be carefully poured out or soaked up after lid is back on or you'll end up with water on the floor when you turn it over. Again, not significant.

I like this humidifier because you can get your whole hand into the tank to wipe off any mold that accumulates. My previous humidifier had a tank with a tiny hole, so once mold got in there the whole thing had to be thrown in the garbage.2-1/4 Vicks Humidifier Replacement Mineral Absorption pads (6 Pack)

I have 2 of the Vicks humidifiers which work well with these pads. Compared to other humidifiers which I've had over the years, the lime scale is almost nil using these pads. I'm sure there must be cheaper knock-offs, but the price (so far) is not too bad ifI buy them in quantity (cheapest way to go). I guess I have to give 'em 5 stars.

Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier

LOOKS: This cabinet model looks better on the website than in person. It is a darker brown than shown (not as orange) but still a pleasing colour. It is made of plastic and has a woodgrain pattern, but doesn't quite live up to getting away with it, mostly because of the slightly warped top vent (yes, vents from top, cannot put stuff on top of here without blocking the ventilation). Ours comes out of the plastic hinge at the back and does not seat well in all grooves, but probably not noticeable to guests. It needs to sit with it's back against a wall, as the back of the unit is not covered by a nice woodgrain cover, although it is brown plastic. You also notice the black filter hooked on the outside back sucking "filtered" air into the unit. My favourite part is it's on four wheels, so it is very easy to move and vacuum around on my wood floors. Unless you have shag rug, it should also be fairly easy to move on a short pile rug.
CONTROLS: It has two dials "humidity control" and "variable airflow". The humidity control does not go by numbers (i.e. 50% 75%) so you don't really know the current level of your home; however it does allow you to set low / comfort zone / high arond the dial, and will toggle off when it reaches the desired humidity level set. We set ours 1/4 turn above the comfort zone and that works well. Note that setting it on high still doesn't peel your wallpaper, you can't even see the humidity coming out like you can on an ultrasonic BUT it does do the trick, as confirmed by the empty bottles I'm constantly refilling. The variable airflow dial goes from OFF/COMFORT ZONE (which starts immediately from off) to HIGH. This unit is LOUD!! When they say comfort zone they mean for your EARS. I only put it up to 12o'clock position (medium, I guess) when I'm out of the room, and any higher is just noisy with HIGH being like a battering ram. The comfort zone is best and since we situate it right by our kitchen/nook and living room we keep it low. (I know what you're thinking we have taken it apart and rechecked our setup, it is correct with nothing unusual accidentally left inside, no real reason it should be this loud. Only thing I can think of is plastic rumbling on four wheels with the echo of our hardwood floors maybe it won't be as much of an issue for you).
BOTTLES: There are two large 2.5 gallon bottles that rest on the left and right of inside cabinet. They are easy to fill and the unit comes with a tube to help you fill from your tap. Also comes with one small bottle of bacteriostatic additive to get you going. We use distilled water so we don't have the hard water build up in the bottom reservoir, you may want to use soft/distilled if you can get it or put an additive in to dissolve minerals. The bottles have handles on both top and bottom so when you turn them over to place them in it is easy to handle the weight. We don't spill any water when doing this and it's a great design. Also good are two "refill" lights that light up orange when each bottle is empty. They are easy to see through the grill on top as you're walking by, but not obtrusive. Very easy to refill while the other still is going, no need to turn unit off.
NOISE and PRICE: It's the only big drawback, and the price at $200 USD is steep for what it is. Would love to see real wood for that price, as there really isn't much to the unit but a small fan, filter, and plastic.
All in all, there aren't alot of different makes on the market to choose from, especially ones that don't look utilitarian. This will do what you're looking for but be aware if you have unusual dryness in your area and need to pump humidity with the control on HIGH, the noise from this baby will stop you from hearing your baby monitor and could keep you and baby up at night; otherwise, sleep soundly in the "Comfort Zone". Good luck with your purchase!Apparently it must be these days even though I found one in a funky Lower East Side plumbing store for ninety bucks back in 1978 that served me well in my Broadway loft for 20 years. It was just a big wheel surrounded by a porous plastic wick belt that turned slowly in a five gallon reservoir much like a water wheel. The belt was easy to remove, wash and replace. No expensive paper intake filters, no bottles (just dump a bucket of water through the top once a day), relatively low noise. The rabbit just ran and ran with an occasional pulley belt replacement, which were generic and available at a local hardware store.
When it finally expired for good I searched in vain for the same machine. So I bought a Bemis which looked sort of like my old workhorse but was internally very different. It didn't work nearly as well as the old one and was noisier to boot. After three years the motor died. I installed a replacement motor. Then a replacement water bottle. And of course new filters twice a season. And I bypassed the broken humidity control.
That brings me to the Essick, which I believe (although I could be wrong) is just a rebranded Bemis. I bought it as a Christmas present for my girlfriend who was suffering nose bleeds from the dryness in her place. But the Essick was too noisy for her so it wound up back at my house as a replacement for my aggravating Bemis. The motor expired during my first season with it so I replaced it. Then one of the plastic bottles sprang a leak in one of the corners. I fixed that with plastic epoxy. Then one of the low water sensors stopped working last year so the blower wouldn't turn off. I just let that one go.
I cleaned the unit and filled the bottles for this winter season and guess what? Another dead motor. It's on the curb now waiting for Sanitation or an enterprising DIYer to suffer the same heartbreak I've been through with it.

The vendor was great I received the humidifier within days and it works great. I wish the water tanks were a little larger. However the ability to remove the two tanks is a great feature. I live in an apartment of approximately 700 square feet so this unit is actually a little over kill but I am very happy with it.Read Best Reviews of Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier Here
I am pleased with how it looks. I find the two water bottles on the size simple to fill. We have found it helpful with the dry air of the winter season. It is rather noisy when the fan is running on high, but I have not used a humidifier that isn't loud at that speed. We turn it to high during the nighttime hours when the family is sleeping and turn it down low to avoid the noise during the evening.Want Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier Discount?
I bought two of these units in 2009 for my house (3500sq.ft.). With forced air my house gets very very dry. The units worked great, but they can be noisy and they still need to be filled so in 2010 we added a built-in humidifier unit to the house. I was going to give the Essick units away when we did this, but I am glad we didn't. The built in, running constantly, only brings my house up to about 20-25% humidity. With the heat running, this is not enough. Low humidity makes my sinuses hurt, gives my kids bloody noses, makes everything shock upon contact and makes your skin feel tight. This morning my humidity was at 16%!! I went to the basement and brought up a unit, and within 15 minutes it is already reading 24%. It is a good idea to buy a digital meter (10-20$ on Amazon), so you can find what is comfortable. The units are noisy when at full speed, but I run them slow in the am and high when we are sleeping and this seems to work just fine. They are easy to refill and I am putting about 20 gallons of water into the house per day! This brings the humidity up to 35% which is comfortable for us. Bottom line, they look ok, but they do exactly what they are supposed to. After 3+ years both units still work just like the day we took them out of the box!!!

We purchased another unit for our second child's room. Strangely, this unit worked differently than the first. The second one leaked (very litte nothing a hand towel under the unit couldn't fix) and was MUCH louder than the first. I also found that I needed to refill this unit more often than I did the first.
I didn't see too much of a problem with the difference, just thought it was worth mentioning...I started getting sick, and for the first time since grade school had a bloody nose. That coupled with getting dry mouthed and dry skin and chapped lips every morning made me consider a humidifer.
When I went to the store I wanted a cool mist one, as cool mist would be nice in my room that is hot and dry during the winter. I expecte a misting machine, this thing doesnt mist, but I'm happy it doesn't after reading all the review of people with soggy carpets because of their misters...
Since having this I haven't felt as dry in the morning which is nice, I breathe easier and started feeling better. It a little louder than some but if you dont like the noise, turn down the speed to lower at night, I personally like some background noise and keep it on high.
The water last for a long time in these ones that use these wicks. There is only one downfall, mine is about a month old and the filter is getting pretty nasty already, although I admit my room is a dusty place and I've been using tap water. Apparently if you use those cheap 1 gallon Distilled waters the filter wont get all dirty or smelly as easily, as distilled water is pure, and tap water well....no matter what you think isn't ;).
PRO: Humidifies room with few refills and doesn't soak room.
CONS: The filter gets moldy/dirty pretty quick.
Hopefully this is usefull, I'm happy with it and I'm sure you'd be.

This humidifier is cheaper than most, especially if you buy something else from the same manufacturer (the $10 off $30 coupon helps out).It only has two speeds, low and high. HIgh is somewhat noisy, but what you would expect. However low is whisper quiet, you can't even really tell it's on at all. I have a somewhat large room 17x14 or so, and it easily keeps it humid in here (I have a clock that has humidity on it, and can see the difference). As far as replacement filters, it appears as those are reasonable as well.
It doesn't have any real features, but it works and it has worked well for me so far with no complains. Quiet, cheap, and humidifes, it's win-win.

I have purchased and thrown away at least 3 other humidifier's prior to this one. I really like this one. The maintenance is so much easier and so far no scaly build-up like I had with the others. I love that the basin tray can go in the dishwasher. I put the filter in the sun to dry out weekly. I am very pleased with this item and haven't experienced any of the problems others have mentioned. Very happy!!Want Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier Discount?
When I purchased this humidifier and set it up, I expected after a couple of hours to walk into my son's room and be able to noticably tell that the humidifier was on. I couldn't tell at all. The room felt just as it did a few hours earlier. With those old humidifiers that I grew up on, I was used to being able to see the humidified air coming out, and to have the room feeling almost muggy. I guess that's what I expected. At first, I was a little bothered that I couldn't physically tell it was on and working. But, after running it for 3 days in a row now, my sons stuffy nose and cough have remarkably subsided, there's no moisture buildup anywhere in the room, and my son is sleeping better.
So, although you don't see or feel this humidifier working, it seems to have done really well in alleviating my sons cold symptoms. I am definitely becoming a fan of the evaporative technology this humidifier uses in controlling condensation build-up.
Bottom Line: If you buy this humidifier, be patient with it. Don't assume it's not working. You have to just watch for it to alleviate symptoms. You will NOT feel or see this thing working, but it has done wonders for my son.

pureguardian H1000 12-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier

Prior to purchasing, I read a number of online reviews. Like most products, there were mixed results, but overall the impressions seemed positive. I had read a review by Paul here who claimed that the product didn't work. I assumed his review was hyperbole. Turns out Paul was right. It just plain doesn't work.
We ran this humidifier in our baby's nursery for 16 hours straight (refilling so the tank was never empty). In 16 hours, the humidity went from 33% to 34% !?!? It just plain doesn't work.
Now, I should also state some obvious stuff. We used the product in what should have been an appropriate environment. The room is very small 9'x9' and the door was closed to eliminate loss of humidity. Also, my experience can not be explained away as a single faulty unit. I had ordered two (another for the master bedroom), so we retested with a second model with identical results. Both produced a visible mist immediately above the unit, so they were 'working'.
This product has great features in theory. I was excited by the nano silver technology which in theory should make for a clean and low maintenance experience.
I returned this product and purchased a well known brand. While it didn't have all the flashy features of this Germ Guardian, it just plain works. I installed it 10 minutes ago and the room humidity has climbed more than 5%.
Bottom line. This product doesn't work. If you plan to purchase it despite these warnings, make sure you keep your receipt for the return.

This is a tiny humidifier! I bought it for my son as he suffers from bloody noses at night. We live in Arizona and it is very dry. We have the full size Germ Guardian on our side of the house and we like it but I thought the lights would bother the boys at night. So we ordered this. It puts out a small amount of steam and only lasts about 12 hours in our very dry house. But it seems to be enough for my boys. The unit does get warm and doesn't turn itself off when empty. It has a light inside which makes the unit glow a very pretty blue which is a great night light.Read Best Reviews of pureguardian H1000 12-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier Here
I've been using the Germ Guardian H1000 in a small bedroom (approx 150 sf). It doesn't really seem to work! I've measured the humidify before and after and it really doesn't seem to change significantly. It's small, quiet and cute but what's supposed to be most important is how well it works. And it doesn't.Want pureguardian H1000 12-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier Discount?
I was first very impressed by the reviews I read and liked that this humidifier is so small. However, it is surprising to me that no one has mentioned the missing research yet when it comes to the nano particles that not only clean the air this humidifier blows out but also may be a health concern!
"A 2005 study in Environmental Science & Technology showed that zinc oxide nanoparticles were toxic to human lung cells in lab tests even at low concentrations. Other studies have shown that tiny silver particles (15 nanometers) killed liver and brain cells from rats. "They are more chemically reactive and more bioactive," Illuminato says, because of their size, which allows them to easily penetrate organs and cells. "Products should be at least labeled so consumers can choose whether they want to be part of this experiment.""
.
There is not a lot of information out there for consumers to really understand the possible impact of nano particles in the air (and in food and clothes), and in the meantime, this technology is being used like x-rays in shoe stores at the turn of the century!
As much as I wanted to like this humidifer, I also don't want to be part of a study in 10 years....good luck to everyone else!

La Crosse Technology WS-1913U-IT-SAL Wireless Professional Station with Wind, Dew Point, Temperature

The biggest problem I had was the erroneous claim that the console could be hung on a wall. One of the La Crosse reps said it could be hung on a nail. Take a look at the slanted curved rear of the console and you can clearly see it CAN NOT BE HUNG UP. She insisted it was suppose to hang from the non-centered tiny hole in the back of the console, a reset hole I believe. The box and the user manual clearly state the console can be hung up. The La Crosse people finally acknowledged the unit can not be hung up. They claim " Unfortunately, the wall hanging option is not available on this model. The indication was a misprint which we apologize for." We specifically purchased this model because it could be wall mounted. Thus, we returned the unit and are looking for a different model from a different company.
If you are looking for an inexpensive weather station with a free standing console this model may be okay. Personally, I'm looking for a product with better customer and technical support, even if it costs me more. This is a great device. You can't beat the price, the quality, the ease of installation. It's great. We love it, completely satisfied. The display unit does not mount to a wall. The exterior wind gauge needs to be precisely mounted to get correct wind direction and does, as we are finding out, prefer to be high on the peak of a roof rather than off the edge of a deck (our deck is about 20 ft above ground level)...in other words, the higher the better.
Overall, if you are a weather nerd and want a weather nut enthusiast grade weather station, this is the one for you. I would highly recommend this unit!
Cheers! This station offered the features that you would want to be aware of before stepping outside. I found the wireless range to be sufficient to place the sensors well out from the house. My only gripe is that the wind rotors are rather flimsy and I am on my third set. La Crosse will not warranty the rotors and you have to buy them from a separate vendor.I have owned the unit not long enough to go through a set of batteries; yet the display dimmed to almost the point where it could not be seen. After contacting La Crosse I put in new batteries (tested for strength and yes they were fresh and full strength according to my Greenlee DM-20). Greenlee DM-20 Manual Ranging Digital Multimeter With Test Lead Now there is no readout on the display.
I went through the full procedure on how to first load the batteries on the sending units then the receiving unit more than once. Still no display.
La Crosse must be run over by customer problems if the responses are indicative of situation. I have used the email approach and have called neither time did I receive much in the way of real help. Yes the instructions are confusing and the unit does not report wind direction that is an error in the instructions and a lacking in the unit. I hope I can find my receipt not bought at Amazon but a big box store. I have had it not a year the warranty is for one year. I anticipate La Crosse will tell me tough luck. My response will be predictable.
If it worked then I would have been pleased certainly not top of the line but promised to report basic information. $90 is not cheap I'll explore for another unit, but there are not many makers of these devices; although there seem to be endless iterations of slightly different models. The La Crosse weather center was very easy to set up. It comes with the hardware to attach the exterior wind gauge. However, the hardware is made for a very slender bar. I used an old bird feeder stand to mount the wind gauge. The description does not say anything about a cable that goes from the wind gauge to the exterior sensor. The sensor gets the best reception right outside the window where the inside unit is. Therefore, there is a long cable that is stretched across my yard to the wind sensor. Mounting on the roof of the house is the best suggestion I have. Don't know how accurate the wind gauge is. I also can't comment on the accuracy of the barometer. It does seem to change during storms.
Overall, a good product for minimal weather information. It's great for immediate temperature and winds.

Venta Airwasher -Charcoal, 554436

Yesterday, the motor in my Venta unit began making a grinding sound after nearly six year of flawless operation. I called Venta customer service this afternoon. After wating a rather long time on hold, I was connected to a very pleasant man, George, who asked me to put the phone next to the motor so he could hear the noise. I did, and he did.
Without a moment's hesitation, George said he would have a new motor shipped at no cost to me, and that delivery could be expected within 5 7 business days.
It's always a pleasant surprise to find a company standing unquestioningly behind their warranty. If only more understood that's all it takes to create loyal customers.

Update on September 17, 2007:
I'm pleased to report , my review, below, is still true in every detail. This product has been a terrific investment.
*****
I live in a desert~like New York City apartment and have owned my Venta Air Washer for almost exactly two years. During this time it has been operating on the "high" setting, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The Air Washer lives up to all of the manufacturer's claims.
The Air Washer is a product of fanatical German engineering, over~design and bullet~proof construction, which accounts for it's rather grotesque price. However, I have owned products of inferior engineering and construction that have had to be replaced after one or two seasons. It is obvious I will own my Air Washer for many years to come.
The principles of operation could not be more simple (it's like a High School science project developed into a luxury product):
1) A fan blows room air straight down into a reservoir of water.
2) In this reservoir of water, a few dozen disks are slowly rotating to multiply the surface area that is wet.
3) Because you are blowing air onto a enlarged wet surface you are multiplying the rate of evaporation.
4) Humidified air is exhausted out of the Air Washer through vents in the side.
THIS WORKS.
On the "high" setting the water reservoir needs to be refilled daily in my apartment (this is highly dependent on your local weather or heating cycle). I end up carrying a couple gallons of water to the device or carrying the device to the bathtub and then back to its spot in my livingroom.
The design of the Air Washer is "neutral." It sits unobtrusive and un~noticed in a corner. It is nearly silent. It is built like a tank: It would be a challenge to damage this product on purpose.
Why not Five Stars?
The Venta Air Washer consumes expendables. You need a water treatment solution to prevent mineral deposits forming on the rotating disks mentioned above (weekly). AND you need a periodic cleaning solution to remove deposits that develop pn the bottoms and walls of the reservoir. I have tried operating the Air Washer without these things. They are required for optimal performance.
Like the device itself, the Venta treatment and cleaning solutions work perfectly and simply. But, THE EXPENDIBLES ARE EXPENSIVE! Assume youy will spend US$50.00 per year.
Also, you would think that for a company selling a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR humidifier, the Venta aroma therapy scents would smell a bit less like a Central American bordello (not that I've ever seen one of those). Skip these even if they're free samples.
If you want the very best at any price, buy this product.
I am not affiliated with either the manufacturer or Amazon.Having used a Venta humidifier in Germany several years ago, I was delighted to see that they are selling in the U.S. now as well. I had a case of sticker shock though, as they are now much more expensive than their older models used to be, but since I used to be very happy with them, I decided to go ahead and buy one anyway.
All Venta humidifiers belong to the class of cool mist humidifiers, which in my opinion is the best principle, as you don't "over-humidify" the room. Normally a cool mist humidifier has a filter that sucks up water from the tank and a fan blows air through the filter. Thus the water evaporates into the air and increases its humidity.
The difference in the Venta humidifier is that it doesn't use filters, but two arrays of plastic disks that rotate through the water. A fan on top of the device sucks suckes air through those disk arrays and the water drops that were lifted up from the tank evaporate.
One of my major gripes with other cool mist humidifiers is that the fan is very noisy even on the lowest setting. The Venta fan is pleasantly quiet. I keep the device in my bedroom at night on the lowest fan speed and I don't notice the fan at all.
While it is true that you won't have to replace filters every few months, you WILL need to replace the water treatment additive at every cleaning cycle (usually 10-14 days), so there ARE some maintenance costs. The LW44 comes with two fillings of the additive, afterwards you have to spent about USD 16-18 for a bottle of the water treatment which will last for 12 cleaning cycles (4-6 months). Venta also sells a cleaning solution, but according to their manual you won't need it in most cases. In any case the cleaning solution costs about $10 and is only good for one cleaning, so using it frequently will really drive the maintenance costs up.
All in all this is indeed the best humidifier that I ever had. I'm not giving it five stars, because I still think the price is outrageously high.

After living with a low end humidifier that did little and made too much noise for the bedroom I decided I would get the best humidifier at any cost. That was three years ago and at that time the Venta fit that bill. My initial impression of the Venta was very good the idea of a fan blowing over wet disks seems pretty ingenous and solves problems like airborn bacteria, mineral deposits, and gives the machine some air cleaning capabilities. Right from the start I was surprised how poorly it humidified the air checked with a high quality hygrometer it only raises a medium sized bedroom's humidity by about 5% at maximum speed and is useless at lower speeds. Furthermore, at maximum speed the device sounds like an unusually loud room fan which is difficult to sleep with. People talk about the device being quiet at the slowest speed which it was but this setting is ineffective at humidifying even a small room based on my readings with a hygrometer. Now I've lived with this unit for 3 years and have encountered further problems that have finally driven me to admit this whole purchase was not a good idea.
The first problem with this unit is that the "air washing" capability results in the machine getting dirty... but unlike almost every other kind of humidifier this dirt is everywhere on the machine throughout the disks, all over the fan, all inside surfaces. On the inside surfaces (which have lots of hard to clean nooks) this dirt is similar to a sticky wax and on the wet surfaces its more like a slime. I spend about 30 minutes struggling to clean it each time I try before I feel I've done an OK job. The Venta cleaner additive doesn't work that well on the disks, doesn't do anything for the waxy sludge on the housing because it doesn't touch it, and the unit has so many difficult to clean parts that it's nearly impossible to get all the dirt. I even tried putting the non-electrical parts in the dishwasher which doesn't work either.
The second problem is that this device can "easily" generate very loud noises to the point that I have to shut the machine off because I'd rather be tormented by dry air than this devices groanings. I say easily because it is possible with enough cleaning and fiddling to keep this device operating at the "merely loud" fan noise that it had when I got it. But after 3 years this is becoming very difficult to accomplish. There are two possible sources for this noise. First, the gears themselves operate by having plastic tabs press against the gears in an undulating fashion. When clean this usually happens quietly... but when even slightly dirty these tabs can make a loud studdering noise that is caused by two materials not moving against each other smoothly. If you've ever heard your car's windshield wipers studder across your windshield instead of smoothly glide over the glass you know what this sounds like. It's not quite that loud, but when you're trying to sleep it might as well be. The second source for this noise is imbalance in the fan. With a little dirt on the leading edge of the fan the fan seems to be aerodynamically or statically out of balance and makes an undulating groan about every 4-6 seconds the way an old fan can be expected to. On a $15 room fan it would be the kind of noise that might cause you to throw it out and get a new one. On a humidifier this expensive?
Finally the device is sensitive to being assembled in just the right way or it will make the noises I've mentioned above much more easily. Normally you just put the top on the device and you're in business. But with these noises you start pressing on different parts of the top to try to shift the plastic pieces into better alignment. Once you press in just the right way and the device stops making noise you slowly remove the pressue and 99% of the time the noise comes back. If you push and prod you are sometimes able to get the machine to be quite, but often you have to unlatch everything, reseat the fan assembly and start over. That gets old fast when its 3am and the machine just starts making a really annoying noise that wakes you up.
I call my 3 year journey with this Venta machine a battle because I've tried tons of things to help compensate for this machine's problems. The initial problem of low humidification is because the device sets up its own recirculating airflow that's limited to an area fairly local to the device. The humidity within one foot of the device is very good according to my hygrometer. The humidifier's fan sucks this air back into itself repeatedly. By placing another fan to the side of the Venta to provide room circulating air current you can get an additional 3-5% humidity 5-7 feet away from the device (like where you're head is in bed). Of course now you've got another source of noise in the bedroom.
To compensate for the gear noise and the dirt problems I've tried adding all kinds of things to the water that might act as either a cleaner or a lubricant or both. I've tried double quantities of the Venta additive, a variety of soaps, various aeromatic oils in quantities where the oil's lubricant properites might help. Really nothing is effective.
In the end I have to say that I'm most dissapointed by this machine's price. The unit is nothing more than a large hunk of plastic with fan on top of it. If it was made in China this unit would cost $39.95. But its made in Germany by a company that seems to be over charging far beyond what the added expense of German manufacturing and poor exchange rate would explain. Being German made I was expecting that the unit be better engineered. The machine is built well nothing has broken in 3 years of constant operation. Its weaknesses are not structural. There are simple ways of eliminating the problems I've listed. Fan noise can be reduced by using a larger, slower moving fan with more and better bearings (something that should be expected in a $500 device). The gear mechanism that generates so much noise should be replaced with a non-contact device like a magnetic drive similar to high grade aquarium pumps. A top of the line magnetically driven pump costs 1/3 of what this Venta costs so magnetic mechanisms should easly have been considered for a $500 device. That these obvious techiques... or any others... are not employed on a device of this cost in the face of its inherent problems is criminal.
99% of the time I recommend spending the extra money (even if it's 5-10 times more) and getting a machine built the right way. This machine is not built the right way it's just 5-10 times as expensive. I don't believe anyone is building a humidifier the right way at this time. Given this I would have to recommend one of the 4+ star devices for $50-70 steam seems to be the best for avoiding white powder and bacteria. I've purchased two Honeywell HWM450 steam humidfiers for $55 each. Their ability to humidify is incredible. In the same bedroom with 50% humidity the Vental might get it up to 55%. The Honeywell can get it to 70% if you want and has digital controls for setting the exact humidy you want (although they don't work that well). Overall any shortcomings of the $55 Honeywell are not related to it's main function humidifying. The same can't be said for the VENTA.

The Venta LW44 Air Humidifier is as advertised.First, it is exceptionally easy to set up, operate, and maintain. It took me less than five minutes to take the humidifier out of the box and place it in position in the front hall. Another couple of minutes were spent reading the few directions that tell you to add the cleansing ingredient included in the box to the water to make sure the fans function effectively. I filled up the tank, turned on the machine, and walked away.
Second, daily maintenance is a snap. I take off the cover in the morning and evening and fill the machine to capacity, put the top on, and walk away. At the end of almost two weeks I brought the machine to the sink, emptied it, rinsed and wiped it out, filled it, added cleaner, placed it back in position, and turned it on again. This might have taken five minutes or so.
Third, the machine quietly puts a couple of gallons of water each day into the air. The Venta is exceptionally quiet and extremely effective. I'm not sure how much cleaner the air is, but we are no longer sneezing from breathing dry, dusty air.
Summary, the Venta LW44 is exceptionally easy to set up, operate, and maintain. The technology of rotating disks works as advertised to add moisture to a dry environment. The air seems to be cleaner, but I can't attest to the extent or degree of improvement beyond saying that we are breathing easier.
Others have discussed the high price of this machine, but if it lasts ten years as advertised, it is well worth the purchase price. Cleaning solution is a modest cost I am willing to pay to keep the machine running effectively. Highly recommended.

It works as expected with a modicum of care, but its retail price is rather high. However, I have found that I do not need to buy the expensive additive they sell. Instead once or twice a week I dump it our, wipe the inside of the tank, refill it with water and put just a very tiny amount of hand dish washing detergent in with the water. The big advantage for me of using cheap dish detergent is that I can dump it frequently without buying lots of their expensive additive, so it never gets very dirty.Their additive contains "surfactants" they say, but so does any detergent. Simple physics, actually: without a little surfactant water tends to bead-up on the plastic disks without wetting them as it should -but the surfactants found in Joy dish detergent do the job equally well. Only trick is be careful to use MUCH less dish detergent than you would to wash dishes, because you do not want suds! Also, ONLY add detergent after dumping, not when just adding water because detergent doesn't evaporate.
In three winters of use the only problem I've had with mine was a small crack on the upper housing which I fixed with tape and it still works OK.
Unlike some users I've never seen much dirt accumulation in the water, because I live in a modern condo so my air has very little dust in it. And because I dump the tank at least once a week, I've not seen that much accumulation of mineral deposits either.
