germguardian LW18 UV-C Light Wand

The first one we bought wasn't working correctly. We returned it and Amazon fed-exed another one. Thank you Amazon! Germ Guardian wasn't helpful at all. I called their help center to check if we were using it right and the return policy, and never got a call back, which was very odd. They don't have live people answering the phone, you just leave a message.

We got this for the mattress because we think there may be some mold in there. My boyfriend still has his cough, but that's probably because it's cold. So I can't say if it's effective or not.

If you are going to buy this, make sure you can buy it from a place that is very easy to exchange and return, seeing as our first one didn't work.

1. Feels cheaper than it looks. Don't let the shiny gray color in the picture fool you, it's plastic and not metal. I had bigger expectations because I already had the big brother to this wand, the beautiful stainless steel uv-c room sanitizer. If the wand was a nice white plastic, I would not care, but making it the gray color makes it look and feel like a cheap knock-off.

2. The wand can only be used 'face down'. I understand this is a safety feature, but I wish I had known about this before I bought it. I was going to wave the wand over part of a wall that I cleaned some mold off of, but positioning this wand so that the light faces anywhere but down turns the light off.

3. It's kind of big. It's such a lightweight unit, I dont' know why they didn't make the body tighter.

The wand has good points to it (check out the other reviews), but I personally was disappointed with what I paid for it. NOTE: Prices on these things have dropped a lot since I bought mine, and they seem to be getting more in line with what I think I should have paid for it.

I am very impressed with the effectiveness of the Germ Guardian 18" wand. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is a little back breaking to use if you are sanitizing a low area.

When I took it to a hotel on vacation, I used it in the shower and could smell it killing the who knows what that was there. My pet toys, beds, personal hygiene items, computer, cell phones, remote controllers, cutting boards, countertops and many more surfaces are sanitized without the use of chemicals, YAH! I can now use pretty smelling surface cleaners and use the wand to get the down and dirty.

When I use the wand over areas that always harvest smells (basement drains) I can smell the burn of the elimination of germs.

I'm unsure what the other reviewers are so upset about, the wand does exactly what it was intended to do, kill germs. This technology is not new just not advertised as much as money making cleaning products. I have a personal unit that uses uv-c light to sanitize water had over 5 years.

The cord is convenient if using in the kitchen or bathroom, it's not very long so I do't use it much. Rechargeable batteries (4AA) get about 2 hours before needing to be changed. The battery cover was difficult to remove use a Metric 3.0. The cover that supports the uv light uses a different sized screwdriver. No accidental removal of the wrong cover.

The built-in safety feature turns the light off if you tilt the wand too much. Exposure to skin and eyes is a no-no.

Of course, I purchased mine from Costco.com so no worries about malfunctioning unit or return policy.

Now with the outbreak of Swiine Flu, I use it even more!

I bought this for a single purpose, for which it exceeded my expectations.

I'm allergic to mold. In 2009 I moved into a new apartment and found I was allergic to the fridge/freezer. There was no visible mold but every time I opened the door I got a face full of allergens that left me feeling nauseous and made my eyes sting. I tried cleaning the whole thing with a bleach solution : no change. I tried running a small HEPA filter in the fridge : no effect. So what to do? Buy a new fridge/freezer, or give UVC a whirl?

The following is one of those "don't try this at home folks" things, but I'll tell you what I did. First I unplugged the fridge/freezer from the wall. Then I removed the cover plate at the back of the freezer to expose the cooling fins. Then I masked all visible wiring because I was afraid the UVC light might cause the insulation to go brittle and crack, which could be dangerous. Then I set up the germ guardian to shine on the cooling fins. I used the one hour timer, set it going, and left the room. After an hour I came back and moved the wand to shine on a different section of the cooling fins. I repeated this 5 times until I'd covered them all. By the time I'd finished the whole house smelled of refrigerator mold. I put it back together, plugged it in, opened all the windows and went to bed assuming I'd just wasted my money on the wand...

By next morning, the mold smell had dissipated from the house. I opened the freezer door, and ... no mold smell! None. Nada. I've used the HEPA filter I mentioned inside the fridge compartment ever since in an effort to prevent a regrowth, and here we are almost two years later and ... no mold.

Fantastic.

Since then I've used the germ guardian on clothes I've bought which have turned out to be moldy right from the store (again, not visible mold, but enough to set off my allergies). Washing has had no effect, but a few minutes under the germ guardian has transformed unwearable clothes into wearable clothes.

If it's so wonderful, why only 4 stars? Because the device has an annoying tilt switch which kills the light if you turn the germ guardian to shine upwards. This makes it virtually impossible to disinfect upwards, and, even more annoyingly, very difficult to disinfect horizontally too : the switch tends to trip even when the light is pointing sideways. I understand that this is a safety feature, but I also wish there was a way to disable it, because not everything can be placed below the wand.

The holding time is really boring... I suggest a attachment of a 2 inch holder from the wand to the object, so we could just place it there 2 inches away without holding it!!

I can tell this lamp really works because you can smell a tiny bit of "burn" after you scan it on carpet, but it won't heat up anything so I dont think it'll actually set something on fire. It's really light weight so I didn't have a problem on scanning stuff with it on a extended period of time. You can always just leave it facing down and let it "burn the bacteria" and move it say once every 10 seconds, doesn't really have to hold on to it. And the auto shout off system is when u are really trying to make the UV light facing to u, It'll still work as long as u move less then 90 degree. So UV lighting the wall was no problem too (although it's impossible to do the ceiling...oh well)

I was a little disapointed with these when I got them. I thought they would finally cure my humidor of me having to baby sit it with distilled water and sponges. I got the 68% ones and pulled everything except them out. The humidor dropped to 64%. I finally did a little more reserach on them and it says with a wood humidor you can lose 1-4%, thus explaining the 64%.Next order will be the 75% and then see if they last 2 months as the mfg says.

The Cast Iron Hand Ashtray

As a chiropractor, which means to do by hand, I loved this ashtray for my husband who smokes the occasional cigar. It is heavy duty, won't fall off the table outside and will not break if it does fall!

Essick Air 4D7-800 Whole House Evaporative Humidifier

I have used it all this winter and it did the trick. My wife was suffering from nose bleeds and cracked skin before we bought this and now she is fine. It holds enough water to only need changed about every other day. The lights that tell you when the resivour needs changed can be seen from across the room. I run mine at the lowest fan speed and it is like it isn't there when the TV is on. With the room quiet you know its there but it isn't annoying. I was dissapointed with the airfilter. It looks like one on a furnace and is loosley attached to the back. It's deffinitly not HEPA quality if thats what your looking for.

This is a big humidifier for adding moisture to several rooms or an entire house. My house is ~1800 sq feet and gets very dry in the winter. This humidifier did a nice job of adding a lot of moisture to the house before it died. Within the first year, the motor stopped working, and I had to send the entire motor unit in for repair. Then it died again---same problem with the motor failing. Very frustrating, and now I have a large piece of useless plastic. I would not recommend Essick/Bemis products because of very poor reliability.

Tropical is not a word that comes to mind when thinking about Boston in the winter (although, with the magic of global warming, it may not be so far off...). One thing that has been very difficult for us the past few years has been the dryness of the winter months with the associated dry nose, throat and eyes. We bought a Venta Airwasher and, I must confess, this is largely a waste of money. It's well-intentioned, but just didn't really add much moisture to the air. At the same time, the Venta was very expensive to buy and expensive to operate needing lots of additive. As one reviewer put it: "Holy mother of G*d! $439 and for what?!"

That about sums up our experience with the Venta...

So, as per usual I spent days and days reading about humidifiers and learning that, basically, they all have craptacular aspects, but a few emerged as really promising. One of them was the Vornado, which a friend has and enjoys. We really liked the design and the technology of this unit, but found that for a little bit more, we could pull trigger on the Bemis 4D7 800 Digital Evaporative Humidifier w/ AirCare® Filter. The main differences we could see were that the Bemis had a bigger capacity for taking care of our whole house basically in the same way as the Vornado, and with a few added features:

* Continuously variable fan speed setting with quiet night-time setting.

* Digital Control Panel

* Automatic humidistat maintains optimum humidity level.

So, I hooked it up and put it in our foyer and it seems to be doing a good job. It's a nice machine, pretty clean lines and goes well with the house. It is BIG, however, and it's like having a radiator in that room now, but the space was sort of dead anyways, so it's no great loss. One key thing, however, is that, just like the Vornado, it makes the GLUG GLUG GLUG sound from time to time, which is taking some getting used to...

In my search, NO humidifier is perfect--they all have a number of flaws. This unit seems to be among the best in that it does a good job adding humidity to the air (but not over-doing it as some complain with warm-mist humidifiers) and is fairly easy to clean. In sum, this is an excellent humidifier that is well-made and does its job admirably. Recommended.

I bought this item direct from Amazon on January 25, 2008. The electric motor failed on Feb. 5, 2009. The unit has a one year parts warranty.

Although I live in an implied warranty state, I didn't bother trying to get it fixed as I bought it with an AMEX card, so I am eligible for a refund. At least one other manufacturer Moistair offers a two year warranty on the motor and a one year warranty on other parts. That's what I will get with my AMEX refund check.

the product is pretty cheaply built; but actually works great....pumps lots of moisture into the air. downside...it is very noisy; so much in fact i run it only on speed 1 (it has 9 speeds). the noise is not only just fan noise, but the fan motor is very noisy as well. i'm very unhappy with the noise level; but haven't found anything better regarding moisture output. i also have two smaller hunter units which are almost impossible to hear; too bad hunter doesn't make a larger model...i buy it in a second.

I like that I can adjust the amount of humidity that comes out of the humidifier. The mist comes out of both Pooh's ears. It is easy to fill and the kids love it. Great buy. Oh yeah and it is very very quiet. I barely even know it is on. Would buy again.

I ordered this cool mist Ultrasonic humidifier from Amazon about three months ago for my 1 year olds room. It is very cute, and fits his room's them nicely. I like the way that the steam comes out of Pooh's ears.

We've had this humidifier running constantly and haven't had any problems yet. It has an automatic shut off for when the water level runs low so that the motor isn't constantly on when there is no steam to produce (a feature missing on my "adult" one in our master bedroom). I also functions as a night light with the tank lighting up a little large for a night light, but it also has a separate on/off switch so that you can choose whether to light up the room or not.

The only drawback to the humidifier is that the water condenses under pooh, so that when you go to fill the tank, there is a puddle of water on top of it that will slosh off.

The other very minor issue I have is with the butterfly knob, as you have to spin it almost all the way around before you get any appreciable amount of steam they could have done a better job in making it more sensitive. It also actually runs over the green/red on/off LED when you turn it on.

Other than those two complaints, this is a very good unit and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I purchased this humidifier to replace the Relion humidifier in my son's room. It constantly needed to be cleaned or mold would form, and the thing started leaking all over the place, damaging my son's new dresser. I looked into so many different humidifiers, and finally decided to go with this Pooh humidifier, and I am glad I did. I use distilled water to fill the tank which is only .76 per gallon at our local Walmart, and a gallon lasts a few days. It's very easy to keep clean, very low maintenance, and I really like being able to adjust the amount of mist that comes out of Pooh's ears. I notice a pleasant difference when I walk in my son's room. The air feels much better. This humidifier is not only cute, but it works very well. I am very pleased with it, and would highly recommend it.

Read the reviews and weep if you are a fine cigar smoker and don't have one of these. This humidor is beautiful. I don't smoke often but when I do I like to have a nice Tatuaje and this box really does them justice. I followed the supplied instructions to season the box which was a little drawn out I would perhaps buy one of the available seasoning kits if I did it again would probably make it easier. Anyway either way you'll get there and this humidor will make you feel spoiled and embellish the experience of keeping and enjoying your favorite cigar.
