pureguardian H1600 80-Hour Ultrasonic Digital Humidifier

pureguardian H1600 80-Hour Ultrasonic Digital HumidifierI love this humidifier! My 3yr old daughter is always catching a cough or cold at school and I constantly use this in her room at night. It's worth the money. I have been through maybe 5 humidifiers since she was born, but I think so far this has been the best one. I was using the frog Crane before this one, which was good use for the price, but cleaning it was a task. If you are willing to spend a bit more , this is a good investment.

I purchased this unit at a big box store 3 years ago at a comparable price. Works just as well today as the day I brought it home. From what I have read (owner's manuals for other brands via manufacturer's websites) this humidifier is the easiest to clean and maintain. Some reviewers for other brands say "no cleaning just replace the silver cube once per year, etc.). Well, sorry to say they did NOT read their owner's manuals! The Germguardian H1600 manual () instructs users to clean with fresh water and a soft cloth on some areas of the device, and to only use the provided brush (which stores neatly inside the unit so it is not easily lost) to clean the silver ion disk with water (diluted white vinegar may be used if necessary). You can use run of the mill TAP WATER to fill the tank and for cleaning...no special chemicals, no gallons of distilled water to lug home, no filters to maintain or replace, etc. (You can use distilled water in your H1600 if you see a lot of white dust; I do not see white dust and have always used the city tap water.) Who could ask for more?

The tank is easy to remove, fill, and replace on the base unit.

Unit is fairly quiet...only occasional gurgling sounds that last only a second, when they occur.

The silver ion disk is visible when you remove the tank, so if it needs a quick clean, it is easy to do when I refill the tank.

My bedroom is an average size (hardwood floors no rugs) and takes no time to increase the humidity level from 27% to 37% using cool mist with middle spray control setting (as measured by a digital Acurite indoor/outdoor humidity & temp monitor sitting across the room from the humidifier). Side note: I do keep the door closed while sleeping. In addition, when I move the unit to my living room I find the humidity level to increase at a satisfactory rate despite the room being considerably larger than my bedroom...the living room has a barrel ceiling and is a fairly open plan to the dining room.

I now want a second unit for my living room so that I do not continue carrying my original back and forth between rooms. I considered more expensive units from other manufacturers that provide a larger coverage area but the cleaning and upkeep concerns me as I know I will forget to clean the unit or not clean it well enough and risk making my family sick!

The product stopped working soon afterward even with filtered water. But the company was helpful and sent a new unit. This product is way better than the junk at most stores like CVS.

I don't normally write negative reviews but given the price of this humidifier I felt the need to speak up. After only 30 days of use, the unit started growing both pink and black mold inside. I was using it in my toddler's room at night and was quite alarmed when I noticed this. I had purchased another unit before this and I never had a problem with mold. Unfortunately, I had to return the first one because of a broken part. It was the second unit they sent that quickly grew the mold. I also noticed that on the front of the unit, a "pure guardian" label was affixed over the "germ guardian" label. Very strange...

I have owned 2 of the H1600 humidifiers and 3 of the older H3010 models. The H3010 models stopped working within a year of buying them and they were replaced under warranty with the H1600 models (the H3010 was discontinued), 2 of the H1600 units have just failed within a month of one another this winter unfortunately its 18 months since I got them so no warranty coverage.

A few positive things to note... the design and function of the units while they are working are fantastic. Customer service at Guardian Technologies is very helpful and fast.

Unfortunately, for the premium price of the units (even in our "disposable" society) I expected to get at least a few years out of them. All of the failures are the ultrasonic transducer just stopping I always use reverse osmosis filtered water with no more than 15ppm TDS and clean them once a month with a very dilute solution of bleach to keep the mold under control. So its definitely a defect in the unit that's to blame.

I also see a number of other reviews that have had similar experiences (across the entire Germ Guardian ultrasonic product line), so I'm sure its not just an odd coincidence that 4 of my units failed.

I really wanted to like these units but unless they fail in the 12 month warranty period, you're out some real money to replace them... as I am now. I unfortunately can't recommend them. It's too bad they can't get a reliable supplier for the transducers, for the cost you'd think they could?
