Leave the fan on 24/7 (which is great if you like a breezy, noisy basement), or use the timer to turn it on and off.
The timer works like this:
When it's off, you set the # of hours to stay off until it turns on.
When it's on, you set the # of hours to stay on until it turns off.
Then you do it again.
And again.
And again.
And over and over until either you, or the dehumidifier, dies, because it WON'T KEEP THE SETTING!
The old units would remember the setting and if you get a salesman, like I did, who has an old one, he will assume that Friedrich had more sense than to redesign the feature to it's present worthless, uselessness. But he would be wrong.
They did do that.
Otherwise, it looks very nice. The fan is only noisy when you realize it will never turn off on its own, unless you're willing to become its timer slave.
What a waste. Very disappointed.
This applies to their present D series, D25, D50 and D70.
Brilliant move, Freddy. This bugger does the job I have a small house 1200 square feet and I live in a swamp so its hot nasty and humid 80% of the year it reduces the humidity in my house down to 30% if i put it on that setting usually its on 45% so nobody gets a nosebleed and headaches for being too dry and it takes 12 hours to fill the bucket mind you the humidity here is about 80% or more most days it is a godsend. The built in pump hose makes it easy if i will be out for days I run the hose to my sink and it wont shut off because it drains not filling the bucket. The only downside to this is that the timer does suck and you can set it to turn off in ?? hours and then when you want it back on you have to set the timer to turn on in so many hours unless you just want it on right away which is a pain because I would forget it turned off. Most of the time I don't bother with the timer I just let it run and check it every 8 or so hours if the hose isn't connected. The humidity is so high here that if it isn't running the humidity starts to creep up so its pointless to not let it run and its an energy star rated so it doesn't use much electricity. It comes with a 1 year limited warranty and 5 years on the cooling fan refrigerant etc all the parts that make it run so i find that for the money it was a great deal and does the job nicely. It is a noisy as a regular box fan but this does not bother me although it may bother others just fyi about the noise.Ive had this for one month so far so good.
Buy Friedrich D50AP Dehumidifier Now
Second one I purchased in 2 weeks. First one was returned since it simply did not remove much moisture (coil fins were barely cold.) Store gave me a new replacement which will remove moisture, but constantly recycles every few minutes, but for very short periods of time sometimes only a few seconds. This happens at any humidity setting, but is worse at higher settings. Timer is a joke and a useless feature. Emailed company and they said these units sometimes do this, but if I felt it was defective to take it in to an authorized service facility for repair. So I am faced with this solution or to try to get the store to accept this one back.I first purchased this unit Friedrich D50D in late July 2011 within 2 months it was leaking. I found a large puddle on my basement floor and could not determine where it was leaking from. I called the store where I purchased it and they gave me a new unit. Now this was the end of Sept 2011--summer was over and I had little use for the unit, however I had my doubts it. Starting early June of 2012 I turned it on watching it carefully. I would shut it off mid day and definitely at night since I did not trust it. Lo and behold it once again has started to leak. Almost two months to the date of use. It was suggested I try cleaning the drip hole--it might be clogged--did this. Checked the bucket--actually was completely dry on the bottom--so no leak there--check all over and cannot find any source of a leak. Turned it on again and within 1 hour there was another puddle under the unit. Two units back to back that leak--this product is worthless. I have owned at least 5 or 6 dehumidifiers over a period of 35 years and presently I am using 2 others in conjunction with this leaking one and NO other dehumidifier has ever leaked on me. The fans gave out or they stopped removing the humidity but they never leaked and they all lasted 10 plus years. My advice--do not buy it.I ignored the other reviews and purchased this unit because of the built in pump. I just received it today and the pump does not work. While there are many products I don't mind as much hand-holding the manufacturer through the process of delivering an adequate product, this is definitely not one of them. If not for the principal, I'd prefer doing the manual bailing on this thing rather than going through the process of returning it. All the best to the folks at fredrick! Thanks for the lesson!
