Honeywell 50300 True HEPA Round Air Purifier

Honeywell 50300 True HEPA Round Air PurifierHoneywell 50250N 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier

This is a review for the 50300 which is similar to the 50250.

This air cleaner really puts out the volume of clean air on high speed, but it is loud. You can not talk or hear over it.

The slow speed is you can hear talking and TV over. Then turn it on high at night for white noice or when you leave the room.

If you want quiet, try the 17005n which does not have the volume (200 sq. ft room) but is quiet enough for to hold business meetings or home use.

I don't believe this model is still being made I think it has been replaced by the 50250. The unit is large but powerful. I have it in my bedroom and I constantly have it running on low. I have a cat and his litter box is in the bedroom as well (no other place for it in my small 740 sq. foot condo). If I turn it on the highest speed, I can't hear myself think, the middle speed is better but I still don't think I could sleep with it on that speed, but the low speed produces a nice amount of "white noise" to drown out the next door neighbor's music. I believe to get the "true" advertised cleaning efficiency, the unit needs to be running on the highest speed.

That being said, I'd say it was a good unit, but the expense of the filters is a big negative for me. First off, I replace my pre-filter once a month. I have to it goes from black to totally white and when the pre-filter becomes too dirty, the efficiency of the unit is lost. Plus, I start noticing alot more dust buildup in the area where it sits. The pre-filters cost around $12.00 each and I've never found any "deals" on them. So that's almost $150/year right there.

The next item is the HEPA filter. I know it says this is a permanent filter that never needs replaced (so why do they make replacements for it?), and all you need to do is vacuum it, and I'd like to believe that, but I don't. I think Honeywell started losing big business when machines like the Iconic Breeze came out and others that advertised "no expensive filters to replace". I see nothing different with this HEPA filter and the HEPA filter for the Honeywell purifier I replaced with this one, so my guess is Honeywell, in an attempt to make their units more price-worthy, started telling people these HEPA filters were "permanent" filters and only needed vacuumed. Someone please explain to me how vacuuming this HEPA filter is removing any of that buried dirt which has changed the color of the inside of the filter from white when I first bought it to dark gray. And if it was some kind of cleanable filter, exactly where is this vacuuming supposed to take place??? In a sealed closet? Because that's the only way the transfer of dirt and allergans would be able to take place without all the "gunk" blowing right back into your home and up your nose (and then distributed by your vacuum cleaner the next time you vacuum unless you get a new bag right away. It just doesn't make sense and I'm very skeptical of a HEPA filter that can be vacuumed back to a clean state -never heard of this before with any HEPA filter. My vacuum has a HEPA filter in it but it still needs replaced. So, although the unit does a decent job, I have to say just like the majority of air purifiers, the replacement filter costs associated with it really make it an expensive thing to run. I'm looking into BlueAir (I think that's the name) air purifiers which are rated higher than Honeywells.

My allergies are just a constantly slight annoyance since moving to Texas. I'm always on the stuffy side...random sneeze attacks, drippy nose. I'm always breathing out of my mouth. My husband insisted we buy this filter, and I had no faith it would help at all, because I couldn't imagine a FAN basically could clear the air of whatever bothers me. However, this works. When I'm stuffy, I turn on the hepa filter, and within 20 minutes of it being on high, I can turn it to low because I will be able to breathe again through my nose. It just really cleans the air. This was worth the money. I bought it to make my husband happy, but now it has actually helped me. I hope other people try it to find relief.

Lots of air purifiers get a bum rap due to the noise. I like to sleep with this unit about 3 feet from me on the low setting. The thing about the noise is that it is a different pitch than a normal fan, but it is definately a large amount of white noise. I don't mind it.

The two things that I can say for sure. One is that it really does work. The dust in any room that you put this in will go down quickly.

The other thing that I can say is that I sleep better because of this machine. No doubt about it. I have much less congestion when I wake up and I am told I snore less.

Knowing what I know now, I would definately buy this product again with no hesitation.

Can't go wrong with a honeywell. Bought this one for mine and my daughters very bad allergies. With a few days I noticed a difference. Works great and so simple to assemble and operate. Only downfall is it is loud on the highest setting, But good for falling asleep too.
