Holmes S1708 Humidifier Bacteriostat

For several years we have used a large humidifier during the winter months. Despite frequent cleaning and care, we had to replace the humidifier filters every few weeks. We started using the Holmes Bacteriostat last winter and only had to replace the filter a single time, three-quarters of the way through the winter.

Follow the directions on the bottle and not only save money by not having to replace the humidifier filters as often, but it can also save you from breathing mold spores growing on an untreated filter (before the filter even looks like it needs changing).

My motivation for buying the Treatment was to increase the lifespan of the wick. I was only getting a few months life from a wick, using about two per winter. Using the Treatment, one wick is lasting more than one winter.

And the bottle lasts more than a winter, so it's worth it.

I hate to recommend W*lmart, but I bought my last bottle there for less than $2. That was still during the end of the humidifying season. Guess I should have bought two. I also bought their last half-dozen HM3600 humidifier wicks for $2 each (in July), when you couldn't find them for less than $12 anywhere on eBay.

I'll need another year to determine just how much longer the wicks are lasting, now that I'm on the Treatment. I just checked my wick. I think I used it for almost all last winter. It's just a little soft all over, but no serious deterioration. And no smell, just in case you're counting.

The instructions recommend adding a capful with every 3 gallons of water -as a start -and then after a while, you're supposed to determine whether your water needs more or less. I used a little less, and it still did the trick for my wick, apparently. My water is very soft. The instructions say harder water will require more Treatment. Granted, that's not a lot of guidance.

I didn't know if it's allowed to combine bactericide with the Treatment, so I didn't. Between the Treatment and being careful not to allow the humidifier to sit with water if it was turned off, the water never got smelly.

Before we tried the S1708 in our humidifier MA0800, we had to replace the filter about once per month. I would buy a case of 6 filters for over $60 each winter season. Since our baby was born we have decided to leave the humidifier running year round. I have used a bottle of this and am now ordering another and have only used 2 filters this entire year. I went to change it like normal, but the filter was like new. The only time I've had to change the filter is when we left it off for a few weeks with water in the tank.

We could not find this item anywhere then i looked on amazon.com and here it was. You have to use antibacterial even when you get a ball with the machine that is said to do the job.

I love this product. I like the larger bottles and it really makes our room clean smelling not musty and molded. Our maching stays super clean and free of all bacteria and molds using this. I would not be without it.

If you are using a humidifier and they say you do not need to add chemical, wrong. Buy this and you will see the difference and how clean your machine and air stays.

Crane Hs-3161 Drop Shape Humidifier Filter

I got this because I knew in advance that my tap water was 'hard'. In the drop humidifier instructions (which you don't read until you have purchased the thing) it says note: It is recommended you used filtered or distilled water. The reason is because the minerals in tap water will cause some white dust to come from the machine. And I guess over time it will cause the unit to not work properly. Anyway I got this thing and they don't list here that it should be replaced after 30-40 refills and you refill every day. That means the life of the filter is around a month. Just consider this expense if you have hard water like almost everyone does.

The filter itself is around 3x5 inches. It fits in there just fine. You have to soak it for 30 minutes before you put it in the machine.

We ordered this filter for our Crane drop humidifier EE-5301 as we have pretty hard water in our area. The filter works well and we have stocked up to get us through the winter season. I read the previous reviews and found the filter to fit perfectly. It seems Amazon took care shipping the correct product. I would recommend this filter if you have lots of minerals in the water or use well water

Crane has updated the drop shape humidifier and in the process changed the required shape of this filter. Unfortunately, they didn't change the model number at all. So if you buy this filter you really have no way of knowing which one you will actually receive and worse yet if it will match your humidifier. I just bought the humdifier new and added the filter because I know my water isn't the best. Got both in the same box and proceeded to think I was going crazy because the filter just wouldn't fit. Ended up calling Crane directly who didn't want to help me because we didn't have the correct number of some sort. Finally received this response:

Dear Crane Customer,

I apologize that you are experiencing a problem with your new Drop Shape and Filter. You are not doing anything wrong! Unfortunately, against our request, some retailers are still selling/shipping an older model of filter that does not work with the newest model of Drop Shape.

Homedics Ar-10 Hepa Air Cleaner 75 Cadr

Bought this air purifier at Bed Bath and Beyond for $100 and its done a nice job in the month we've had it. Catches alot of dust and cat-hair. Its also nice at just circulating air constantly. Its quiet on low and pretty loud on high but if you use it often, it just turns into a nice background white-noise after a few days. The filters need to be replaced but if they last 18 months like advertised then the investment is worth it.

The unit is still going strong almost two years later. We don't use it constantly so we haven't replaced the filter yet since we temporarily switched in a new filter and noticed no reduction in air flow. No dust on the interior fan either.

I will note that you must vacuum the filter periodically.

I bought this mainly because I have two rabbits living in my room, and I started noticing a stale musty smell when I came home from work. I don't have allergies so I can't say how much effective this air purifier is at removing allergens, but I will say that I have noticed the smell much less, and it's pretty much completely silent on low. I keep it on 24/7, so the filter will probably age quicker, but so far so good. It's a substantial size, about the footprint of a computer tower so I tucked it in on a bottom shelf that is well ventilated. I really didn't believe in air purifiers before but I think this product may have changed my mind!

Sleek look and works very well with relieving allergy and asthma problems! medium and high levels can be pretty loud, but it could be louder. Becomes background noise after a while just like heaters and AC do. I was having allergy and asthma problems constantly and after only having it out for a few minutes my wheezing went away! bought this from a local store. it blows a nice mist that I like but the box said it runs 10 hours. pamplet inside says not to leave house for 6 hours with it running. we slept six to seven hours and it was completely dry.

It's very small and uses a wick. The first one I bought stopped working after a couple of days for no apparent reason. Had to return. The replacement continues to work, but works best when completely filled to keep the wick wet. If it isn't used every day and is allowed to empty, the wick has to be taken out and soaked again to get it going. There's no control for how much mist you get, only on/off. It is big enough to run for about twelve hours.
