Vornado AQS 25/35 Replacement HEPA Filter

Vornado AQS 25/35 Replacement HEPA FilterThis filter is way too expensive. Vornado must live by the razor blade business model sell air filter units for cheap (well, not really) but charge obscene amounts for replacement filters.

Pro tip: Buy the Filtrete Maximum Allergen Reduction 18x24 inch filter from the local hardware store. Cut/snip it in half and you get 2 filters for this Vornado for 1/5 the price per use. The cut edge won't be completely flush due to the corrugation, but some careful pressing/flattening on that edge will make it work.

It's spring time, which equates to allergy time, so it was important for me to ensure that our Vornado air purifier was geared up to handle the pollen. I was so relieved to find that this HEPA filter were still being sold, since the actual air purifier unit has been discontinued ... thanks Amazon for making it easy to find! easy to order, and quick to ship. I've installed it and it's working as expected.

Used with the pre-filter, this has been a great help in removing pollen from the air in this bad pollen season. I believe that this is well worth the price.

The Hepa filter does not last 2 years as Vornado claims. I checked mine today (located in a small bedroom) after only 6 months and it is completely black and clogged. I also replace the carbon pre-filter much more often than Vornado recommends. The pre-sorb filter is supposed to last 2-3 months and I have to change it at least once a month. I guess that means it is doing its job, but consumers should be aware that it is expensive to maintain because of the need for frequent replacements.

APRIL AIRE 360 HUMIDIFIER

APRIL AIRE 360 HUMIDIFIERLike others, I was tired of constantly filling and cleaning my console humidifier. The Aprilaire 360/350 is the only whole-house unit I could find that works independently of a forced air heating system, so it was the only choice for my home with radiant floors. Buyers should be aware that Aprilaire requires installation to be performed by an HVAC professional, or else the warranty is void. I chose to install it myself, and the money saved on professional installation would easily pay for a replacement unit if ever needed.

The first thing I noticed after unpacking the unit was a manufacture date nearly 3 years prior. They must not sell many of these. The second thing I noticed was a screw in the bottom of the box. It was one of the motor mounting screws which had fallen out, and the nut was missing. This screw also connects a ground wire to the case, so the wire was hanging loose inside the unit. I located a replacement nut and reinstalled the screw. Every other screw holding the unit together was also loose.

I had no problems with installation. I discarded the self piercing saddle valve that comes with the unit and instead used a tee fitting to tap off a supply line from a nearby sink. The drain tube must not have a "trap" where it exits the unit or it will overflow. The outlet grille is almond or ivory color, I painted mine white but that's just my personal preference. They should offer them in different colors, the plastic grille is somewhat difficult to paint properly.

Upon powering up the humidifier for the first time I was surprised to find that the fan is a lot quieter than my Holmes console humidifier, but I also noticed that it doesn't move much air. More on that later. There is a fairly loud hissing noise from the water supply line, similar to the sound of a dishwasher filling. The water flow rate is controlled by an orifice in the outlet of the solenoid valve. The orifice causes a hissing noise as the water is forced through it. I thought I'd get used to it, but after one day I couldn't stand it any more. I removed the orifice and installed a pressure regulator on the supply line. This completely eliminated the noise, and by adjusting the pressure I am able to limit the amount of water that gets wasted by going down the drain. Some excess water flow is required in order to get a decent amount of humidity out of the unit. 5 psi puts it right about where it was with the orifice and full pressure, but without the hissing noise. I removed the "Filter Check" gauge from my old console humidifier and stuck it on the outlet grille of the 360 so I can monitor the effects of my changes. It's a direct indicator of the moisture level of the air coming out of the humidifier.

So on to the lack of airflow. I can tolerate a bit more fan noise and my warranty was already void, so I began looking into a faster fan motor. Upon inspecting the motor to find the specs, I noticed the fan blade was not aligned with the shroud. It was set back too far to be effective. This may be done intentionally at the factory to limit fan noise. I moved the fan forward and noticed an immediate improvement in airflow and as a result it also makes slightly more noise as the air exits the grille. It now moves enough air to pull the closet door closed, which it didn't do before. I need to leave the door cracked open until I can install an inlet grille in the door.

Aprilaire says this unit requires hot water. They recommend installing a small dedicated water heater if the main hot water source is too far away to supply consistent 120 degree water temp. I hooked into a hot water line with 9 feet of 1/4" copper tubing, but the total distance to the heat source is much further. The small amount of flow that this unit uses is not enough to sustain hot water in the pipes unless a sink or shower is running, so 99% of the time it is getting cold water. It still works fine. I'm sure it would work better with hot water, but it does work with cold water. When it is getting hot water, the excess water going down the drain is cold so there is not much energy wasted on heating the water, most of the heat is put into the air.

The manual humidistat that's supplied with the unit is just adequate. It seems to have about a 5-7% RH differential. Maybe this is normal for humidifiers or maybe it's done to prevent short cycles. I have two separate hygrometers in different parts of the room about 15 feet away from the humidifier. With a setpoint of 35% the humidity will drop as low as 28% and then the unit will run until it reaches 33-35%. I think a 1 or 2% differential would be more comfortable. My console humidifier did a much better job of maintaining a constant humidity as long as I remembered to fill it. I will be upgrading to a combo thermostat/humidistat with automatic outdoor temp reset.

Overall I am pretty pleased with the Aprilaire 360. I think build quality should be improved (loose screws, poorly positioned fan blade). It's a very simple device and I believe it's greatly overpriced, but there is no alternative that I'm aware of. For the price I think they should include a high quality humidistat that displays current humidity level, and different colored grilles. I love what the unit does, but I rated it three stars because of high price and lack of quality control.

I've been dealing with humidity in the teens in the Eastern Sierra at 8,000 feet for over a year. I couldn't sleep, my nose always hurt, my skin cracked and itched, everyone agreed something needed to be done.

My place is about 2,300 sq. ft and the humidity shot to more than 50% in the first 12 hours of operation. This unit is basically perfect regarding the size, cost and ease of installation. A professional should be able to install this unit in less than three hours. I would recommend this unit to my grandmother and probably will.

Since I gave this unit 4 stars instead of 5 my ONLY complaint is that the unit is a little loud. The fan is strong but not silent. I will contact the manufacturer and update this review based on their suggestion. However depending on the location where you install this unit it might not matter. Additionally this fan noise might be consistent with the noise of most other units so take my comments with a grain of salt.

I installed the unit near our main intake vent for our heating system to spread the humidity throughout the house when using the fan or the heating system.

I am glad I bought this unit. I was so tired of daily filling, draining and cleaning my console humidifier, and the crusty white stuff that accumulated on it (not to mention the slime mold that grew in the tank if I didn't clean it with bleach.) This unit connects to your hot water line and to a drain, so it supplies its own water and continuously cleans itself. There's no crusty white stuff, you just set the humistat and forget about it. It's fairly quiet, too.

Though the unit is fairly small (about 13 inches square) and not heavy (15 lbs.) it's more than adequate to completely humidify our 1600 sq. ft. home.

I don't know about energy usage or reliability because I just started using it, but so far the performance has been wonderful.

Space-gard And Aprilaire #4100 Aprilaire Pump Rebuild Kit For 448, 445a, 445

Space-gard And Aprilaire #4100 Aprilaire Pump Rebuild Kit For 448, 445a, 445Although the component is exactly what's needed to repair an outdated, non-functional Aprilaire humidifier, and it fits perfectly into the existing space without needing to be modified in any way, it is ridiculously overpriced. For your money, you get the two-piece, snap-together plastic pump housing, a replacement plastic pump impeller, a plastic spacer, and a thin metal washer. All told, these pieces contain possibly a dollar's worth of materials. Although no instructions are supplied with the parts, they are easy to assemble into the existing humidifier. But, as with all special-purpose replacement mechanical components, you can't grab them at the local hardware store: the supply is low, so the price is high. I would suggest to anyone that needs this part to consider replacing the entire humidifer instead.

Air-O-Swiss Refurbished 7145 Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool Mist

Air-O-Swiss Refurbished 7145 Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool MistRemind me not to buy something that I can't easily return online. This humidifier really didn't work for me. Didn't feel a noticeable difference in the humidity level of the room. The opening to put the water in is difficult to unscrew, to refill it you have to pull the water holder off the unit, so water gets everywhere... The unit also doesn't dry naturally in other words even if the water level runs out it still stays web inside the unit. An opening at the top of the unit would be better design and made it easier to let dry out if not in use. Had to travel for work and now realize I'm 5 days past return date. And to return I'd have to print out labels why can't I just fill out the request online and ship it back? Just kinda bummed about the whole situation.

Started overflowing on first use. I'm glad I hadn't fallen asleep yet, would have been very dangerous if the water had reached the powerstrips before I noticed.

Return policy is extremely tedious -I'd recommend you go and pick it up from a local store. It seems humidifier technology is not that evolved yet, better to purchase it in a way that is easily returnable.

We are very pleased with the wonderful humidifier. I suffer from severe allergies and the dry heat in the winter wreaks havoc for me. Since we purchased this Air-O-Swiss humidifier, I can sleep at night and do not have to get up in the middle of the night to take more Sudafed. It is quiet enough for your bedroom too, but you do have to get used to a little bit of noise. I am a light sleeper however and it doesn't bother me at all.

Hunter 35156 Warm Steam Vaporizer

Hunter 35156 Warm Steam Vaporizerlet me tell you why i don't want to keep it

1. noisy and loud. Every time it started boiling, it made a noise that sounded similar to a deep fryer something very annoying.

2. No power switch, you had to unplug to turn it off.

3. Run up to only 7 hours per tank filling.

4. Not a whole lot of steam coming out and when the steam actually does comes, lots water came out too. During the operation of this device it totally stopped and after a few seconds it started again.

Highly recommend against buying this brand.

It serves its purpose, and easy to clean. But, you have to refill every night, and clean it the next day, everyday. Also, it bothers me with the noise. Well, you get what you pay for.

  • Vicks V745-A Warm Mist Humidifier

I have been using a humidifier in my bedroom for the last 12 years with no problem. I recently bought this one for the nursery, and after about 2 months of use, there is a gray film on all the parts. Because it's in the baby's room, I have been good about cleaning it as suggested but the film is just getting worse. Consumer relations stated that it is because of hard water deposits, but I've never had this problem with my other humidifiers!

Vicks Humidifier, Warm Mist

Vicks Humidifier, Warm MistI bought this warm mist humidifier after owning a vaporizer and a cool mist humidifier. The vaporizer was fine except that it was too hot and burned my son's arm, so i needed something else. The cool mist humidifier (different company) broke very fast besides for the expense of changing filters.

This humidifier is great.

1) The warmth is very soothing but not too hot-it won't burn you if you put your hand over the mist.

2) It never leaks onto the floor or gets the surrounding furniture wet (the other one did all the time).

3) It is whisper quiet. You can hardly hear the very soft humming sound even when right near it even on high.

4) It gives out a nice amount of humidity even on the low setting.

5) It is very simple to clean.

6) It is very light and easy to fill up.

On the low setting the water lasts well over 12 hours-I haven't timed exactly how long. On high it goes for about a little over 11 hours. The auto shut-off works very nicely.

I really think this product is great so far. I've paid more for it at a local store and still think it's worth it. The Amazon price is really great which makes it a great buy.

I purchased this product 3 weeks ago. I chose it because I prefer a warm mist humidifier and did not want to be bothered with filters. It has been great. If you follow a few basic steps, keeping it clean and running at top performance is not a big issue.

1. Empty the tank whenever unit is going to be off for more than a couple hours. I forgot to do this once and it formed lots more scale and took a lot more time and effort to remove it.

2. If you do not use distilled water (which I don't), descale the heating chamber with white vinegar every day or two. White vinegar is cheap. I don't have to mess with gallons of distilled water bottles or filters for my faucet. I live in a very hard-water area and this method has worked for me: When I get up, I unplug the unit, empty the tank, and put vinegar in the heating chamber. By the time I've showered and dressed, the mineral deposits have begun to fall away from the heating unit. It only takes a bit of prodding to remove the stragglers. I then wipe with a cloth. If I'm going to be home, I refill and start the unit. If I'm going to be gone, I put everything in the dish drainer & it's ready to reassemble and use when I get home. This amounts to about 5 minutes of effort daily. Once a week I disinfect with the bleach solution as recommended in the manual.

I hope this helps. Using the above methods have made this the simplest humidifier to run and keep clean that I've ever had. It also looks like the washer in the tank cap can be purchased at any hardware store, an issue I've had with previous humidifiers. It would be nice if the product came with with a replacement washer and gasket but it's not a perfect world.

UPDATE, Dec. 12, 2010: Starting the second winter of using this humidifier. I've discovered it's even quicker & easier to keep scale at bay if I make sure the tank does not go empty. In the morning I then unplug the unit, remove the water tank, cooling chamber & tray but leave the water in the heating chamber. I then add vinegar to the water in the heating chamber & let it set for several minutes. This loosens what little scale has formed overnight and it's easily prodded loose. I then empty & rinse the heating chamber, dry it, and the unit's ready to go. I've been using the unit this season since Thanksgiving this year & it's performing like new. I always run it on low but will probably use the high setting sometimes later in the season. If you let the tank go empty using tap water the scale build-up is much worse. I'm still very satisfied with this product.

I received an Evenflow vaporizer during my shower and thought it would help once baby & I got sick. Way to small for my room. I looked at many vaporizers and warm mist humidifiers that would actually work in our room. This one was perfect. I doesn't run out in the middle of the night, and helps keep the room warm when the heat goes down to low at night [apartment headaches]. The amount of night time coughing has lowered and asthma triggered dryness and dry sinis at night have ended. Perfect buy without the high cost.

This was a good purchase for me. I can tell it's working, in the morning, there's condensation on our bedroom window. You can leave it on all night. Pretty quiet. Good effect on colds.

I absolutely love this humidifier......but you can get it at Target for only $29.99 and that isn't a sale price....PLUS no shipping. I don't know why everything is just more expensive at Babies R Us, but I found this to be true with ALOT of the items that we were looking to purchase and ALOT of the people who bought us things just printed my registry off and went to either Target or Walmart to make the purchase.
