Venta Ultrasonic Humidifier

Venta Ultrasonic HumidifierWOW! Finally one that WORKS and doesn't wake the neighbors!

We have been through just about every type/brand of humidifier in our quest for the perfect one over the last 15 years. So when I pressed the "on" switch on our new "Venta Sonic VS205" I knew our quest was finally over. Out came an unbelievable "fog cloud" of humidity that gently wafted over the room. Later as the humidity level rose monitored by the nifty LCD readout on the front the unit suspended "cloud formation" and waited patiently until the room percentage had dropped below the set level and then resumed.

Pros::

1) Absolutley soundless!!! Many of the other brands worked fine but were so noisy we couldn't sleep.

2) Runs at least 24 hours on a fill (depending on what level you set it on ours is 45% 50%)

3) Instant gratification monitors the humidity level in your room not many actually do this you just have to guess and never really know so this is big.

Cons:

1) The only one it's a bit tricky to fill. Have to turn the tank upside down and unscrew the filter. As an Industrial Designer I could come up with at least 3 better ways to do this one being simply have another fill cap on the top. But this is really not a problem since the unit has so many other admirable features (AND you only have to do this once a day!!)

Having tried many different types of humidifiers to help ease the dry winter weather, I like this one the best.

1. Unlike evaporative humidifiers, there is no wick. After a few weeks, the wicks develop a moldy odor and need to be replaced.

2. It's very low maintenance: I've had 4 units now for several months (one in the master bedroom, one in each of the kids rooms, and one in my office) and the most I've had to do is wipe the base with a towel and clean some scale off the oscillator with the included brush.

3. It's easy to operate. Two knobs (humidity setting/spray power) and one button (mist temperature). It doesn't have a built-in humidistat, but that's an advantage as far as I'm concerned, since most reviewers say the ones that do are inaccurate anyway. $20 buys you a good hygrometer that you can place anywhere in the room. (I've got the Honeywell TM-005X)

4. It's very quiet. Really. You can barely hear it.

5. I was reluctant to buy an ultrasonic humidifier because, as others have noted, the mist only goes a short distance and it mainly humidifies the floor in front of it. But this unit has a pretty good kick to it. And here's a tip -buy a small fan (I use a Vornado Flippi V8) and use it to waft the mist up into the room. The Vornado on it's low setting is also barely audible, looks great, and takes up minimal space. The Venta-Sonic/fan combo will set you back considerably less than the Vornado humidifier with the built-in fan. Vornado V8 Flippi Personal Fan, Medium, Black

6. Yes, you have to turn the unit upside down to fill it up. Big deal. Don't you have to do this with every water tank?

7. Most important -it humidifies. It easily raises the humidity level 10 to 15% in a very large 15x 20 foot bedroom with a high tray ceiling.

I have had a Venta VS205 for several months. It does not have an LCD indicator on it -I think the VS207 has the LCD gauge. I think the picture on the web is incorrect. I live in a very dry climate. I have found the VS205 a delight. It is very quiet, works well, needs to be refilled about once a day. I operate it at about 1/2 speed in a 315 square foot second floor bedroom. At half power it raises humidity from 2% to 30%-35%, then maintains humidity at that level. No "white dust". The warm mist is not very warm, but I rarely use that function since I am more interested in the energy efficiency of cool mist operation. I like the removeable tank. At first I found flipping the tank over to fill it inconvenient, but I having filter access on the fill cap is an advancage. I am going to buy a second one for my first floor.

This unit worked well enough for 10 months and then stopped fogging. I called the service number as it is still under warranty but they refused to take it back or offer any option other than return it to point of purchase. BB&B no longer sells these and insists that my only option is to contact Venta who loops me back in circles. Very poor service as others have stated so I replaced this for half the price from Lowes with a Hunter 33257 Hunter 33257 Carefree Humidifier Plus with Permawick with the new Permawick system that only requires a cleaning once a year instead of replacing the pricey filters every few months. While the Hunter produces much more noise on high the low setting is fine for sleeping. In addition the evaporative system does not produce any of the white dust that the Venta did. I live in Colorado and we have some of the purest water in the US flowing out of the Rockies so I don't feel there is any hope in an ultrasonic unit not producing copious amounts of white dust. We also have some very dry air and the Hunter also humidifies a larger area better without leaving the puddles that the Venta did. I'm going to call the parent company in Germany as I've found EU companies tend to care about the quality of outsourcing vs.US firms. I'll see how that goes and will revise this if a decent warranty solution is provided by them.

Stay clear of the Venta's for now though, take a look at the new Hunters with the Permawick, and save yourself some time, money, and frustration.

I have just started using a VS205, very impressed. Over a number of years I have used every type, from a fan pulling air through wet straw to real wicks, furnace mounts, and ultrasonics. The VS205 is doing very well so I have got online to see if I can find them cheaper. I then started reading reviews.

People you must use clean water. The white dust, slimes etc. are whats left after you remove the water from the source. White dust is from dissolved minerals. Slimes and algaes are either in your supply water or pulled out of the air they are everywhere. Mineral sediment can be cleaned with vinegar, its an acid which redissolves the minerals. Slimes and algaes can be killed with household bleach, you may have to scrub their residue to delay regrowth.

I have various qualities of water in my house as I use untreated for toilet flushing, then filtered and softened for dishwasher and clothes washer, then taste and odor filter for kitchen and bath, to reverse osmosis for drinking, cooking, and HUMIDIFIERS. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved solids which is what is causing the most problems and work with these units. All my humidifiers are more effecient and cleaner with the cleaner water. Wicks don't calcify as quick and I expect the Venta-Sonic to live a long life with RO water as it's supply. No, I am not affiliated with reverse osmosis sales, I purchased one for spotless rinsing of my motorcycle. I went ahead and piped it to refridgerater and kitchen sink. I decided to use it in humidifiers as it would reduce wick replacement. They can only be cleaned twice before deteriating too badly.

This is the grain of salt to take to other reviews. Enjoy!

25-cigar Riviera Humidor

25-cigar Riviera Humidor
  • keeps under 25 cigars
  • brass frame hygrometer
  • comes with a round humidifier
  • Lined with premium kiln dried Spanish cedar
  • features a scratch-resistant felt lined bottom

I am very happy with this humidor. It is a well crafted box with a beautiful classy look. The hindges work smoothly with no sign of flaw. There is no gap in the seems and no signs of leak. As a first time humidor buyer I would like to have seen more literature with this product to guide me on set up and use. I was also a little unhappy with waiting for my humidor for nearly a month. In all fairness I am stationed overseas, however I receive other products ordered on line in 7-10 days. This humidor does come with a humifier and a hydrometer which work fine, but they are very cheap devices. I felt compelled to purchase better working devices to replace them. Regardless, I would still recommend the purchase of the humidor if you need a small desk top humidor to store 10 to 25 cigars. Considered the cheap devices as freebees. I did have to contact customer service regarding this order as one item was missing upon delivery. The customer response and support was outstanding and definately made up for my disappointments on this order.

The Hygrometer is worthless. The Humistat is a foam filled type unit. Humistat works well. Just remember on the initial charge do not use a 50/50 solution. 1 part glycol to 6 parts distilled water and it will hold 70% humidity for a month per fill. The actual Humidor is fantastic. Seals nicely. Provides a slight spice to cigars like true Spanish Cedar should. Just replace the crap Hygrometer with a good digital and it's a perfect unit.

This isn't the best Humidor in the world, but you can't beat the quality for the price you pay. It's large and sturdy, plus it looks good on my end table. The adhesive on the included hydrometer is a little weak, but some crazy glue took care of that in a jiffy. I would definitely recommend this for someone who is looking for a way to store and display their cigars tastefully but doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money.

This humidor is great for a first time humidor buyers, like myself. It's real spanish cedar on the inside that make your cigars smell and taste delicious. The outside looks classy and elegant, despite it being veneer. The humidor comes with a small humidifier and hygrometer. The sticky material used to hold the humidifier and hygrometer to the lid of the humidor doesn't stay well, so I had to super glue it on. The humidifier has a nice magnetic backing so you can remove it from the base and refill it with distilled water/propylene glycol (which I just use cheap rewetting eye drops). It also comes with an instruction booklet that tells you how to break in (season) your humidor, charging and filling your humidifier, calibration of the hygrometer, and how to store and clean it. The supplied hygrometer, however, doesn't have a small screw on the back to calibrate it if it is off, so you'll just have to know that it's off by 10, 15, 20, etc. Though there are those few minor deficiencies, the price offsets them. If you're a first time humidor buyer, you don't want to spend a lot of money, and you're not sure what to buy, I highly recommend this model.

Good item for the price but hygrometer is somewhat cheap but replacing it with a better one it works just fine.

Crane 1 Gallon Humidifier, Hello Kitty

Crane 1 Gallon Humidifier, Hello KittyI only rate an item if it's extremely good, or really poor, and this item is great. We bought it for our daughter because she would cough at night. After we put it in her room it really reduced her coughing. It also doubles as a great night light. We liked it so much we bought a similar humidifier that was in the shape of a panda, but it was not nearly as good as the hello kitty product, and it didn't have the night light feature.

I was looking for a small and quiet humidifier and this was exactly what I needed. Also, because I had a bad experience with my previous humidifier, I wanted one with no filter. I have it for 2 months now and no problems at all.

May 2008: Still fine! January 2009: Still fine, no complaints! January 2010: It's still working fine!

I'm shocked to say...this is truly my favorite humidifier, and I've had about 8 or 9 in my lifetime. I bought it for my 8 month old daughter who just caught her 1st cold. I went online & read every review before I purchased anything, and I was surprised that these Crane animal cool-mist humidifiers were getting such a great rating. So I went for the Hello Kitty, because it's cute and also I love the nightlight feature, and sure enough...it's the best! The cool mist comes out IMMEDIATELY, which I like. It also doesn't leave anything wet anywhere around it, which is shocking! I've always had warm mist in my previous humidifiers, so I wasn't sure how much I would like it with the cool mist, but it works out great. Plus I feel rest assured that my daughter won't get burned (as soon as I turn it on, she waves her hand through the mist). She has a 12x12 room and I find that if I leave it on too long (like all day), it's almost like walking into a cloud! That's how much mist it puts out. So, if I leave it on during the 12-13 hours she is sleeping, that is perfect. Then I can turn it back on when she's napping and turn it off when she's awake (I truly don't need it running continually because you can feel the moisture in the air). Again nothing in her room got wet! I was afraid of dampness on the walls or carpet, but it just doesn't happen. And I like that it doesn't run out of water too quickly. I was worried that half way through the night it would be empty, but that is not the case. I only have had to change/refill the water every 2 days. Another cool feature, you can see how much water is left! I like that a lot. One peek in her room at night, and you can see the water line through the nightlight so I know if she has enough to keep going all night. I highly recommend this, and I like that I can just drive to Target & pick it up there too.

This thing does not have a mist that shoots out of the kitty's ears. It's more like a vapor that stays right by the ears. We have a meter to measure humidity (yes we're that dorky) and after a night of running the Hello Kitty machine the humidity didn't budge. We are returning this item and are going to get a good old fashined humidifier from Walgreens. Maybe we just got a dud because I read other good reviews.

We bought this when I hit my annual bout of bronchitis and found that the old humidifier was pretty much dead. I honestly wasn't expecting much, just something that spits out some water and looks cute, with a higher price tag for the Kitty. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is actually a very high-quality humidifier, with all of the bells and whistles found on others in the same price range. Others boast two settings, this one has an entire adjustable range of settings. It doesn't make a sound at all and it's easy to fill and to clean. The nightlight is cute, but not very useful, as the LED power indicator is extremely bright and puts out more light than the nightlight does. Still, though, it's a soft purple and very soothing to look at.

Science has shown that happy thoughts can help contribute to quicker healing and recovery, and something this adorable can definitely add to that.

BestAir A10W Aprilaire 10 Paper Wick Waterpad

BestAir A10W Aprilaire 10 Paper Wick WaterpadI have a aprilaire 500 humidifier that uses this size pad and due to size restriction of area of furnace had to use 1 size smaller humidifier than I wanted (right on edge to use bigger) I bought this pad locally first and it is more efficient at raising to humidity in the house than the metal OE one. Only issue is will have to be replaced more often since it uses a fiber type pad which if you try to clean will fall apart but is small price to pay for better efficiency of unit.

My manual states this is the recommended and most efficient waterpad for my humidifier. I couldn't find this one locally a few years ago when I stocked up on waterpads at Lowes. This year, my humidity was dropping daily as winter set in. After these arrived, I put one in immediately, and started seeing improvement in humidity within a day. It's now the coldest month (February) and my humidifier is still keeping up, thanks to these waterpads.

Found this third-party replacement after trying to find the filters in the stores. It fit just fine ... until it eventually crumbled after a year. My factory filter was good for 4 or 5 years with yearly cleanings. This one only lasted a year. More expensive than buying replacement from Lasko directly, but I haven't see what they ship (I am sure not the one that came with it originally).

does the job. Just buy several, one for each year.
