I was given this travel humidor by my brother in law for a holiday gift. I'm a corporate pilot so I'm on the road two weeks out of every three. I have used it for quite a while and can honestly say it is awesome. It works perfectly keeps the cigars at the right moistness for a couple of weeks. It's a rugged design and is truly water tight ... I drop mine in a deep puddle about a month ago and when I open it up the smokes where in perfect shape. I tend to smoke a Robusto sized which is about 5-6" long and 50-54 ring (the diameter of the cigar) cigar and it fits five stick with out any problem with room at the bottom for my cutter. I would recommend it to anyone who travels and likes to bring some of their own sticks with. The price is a steal other comparable 5 cigar travel humidors run from $20 to $40. Buy it you'll love it. Now I received mine in a sampler from Cigars International, it came with 8 cigars & this Herf-A-Dor for $20, shipping included, so my suggestion would be to look around & try to find that deal. This thing was made to hold up, SOLID by all definition, when I first opened it, it actually gasped. If that doesn't tell you this thing closes tight, not sure what will. It'll carry 5 Churchills or 10 Nubs, all depends on what you're smoking really. The little humi disc is small but I don't think it's really meant to hold cigars for months at a time. I noticed that mine stayed good for about a week or two which is fine for me. I'd definitely recommend this & have. I had 2 friends buy that same sampler combo that I did & we all love it. The cigars were good & this humidor just can't be beat.

I bought this one even though there were zero reviews on it at the time. Lesson learned b/c even though it seemed to work great when turning it on for the first time, over the course of several nights, it leaked all the water out of it while I was sleeping. I tried the troubleshooting that is written in the translated instruction manual, but nothing mentioned leaking. The instruction manual did not make a lot of sense in some parts since it was clearly translated from Chinese by a computer.

Oh well, looks like I'll be buying one of the less attractive ones that actually work!

I have owned this for several months and have found it to be noisy and the light bright for nighttime. I use this in the bedroom and those two issues are annoying. You also have to be careful not to fill the tank too full or it doesn't work. Took us awhile to figure out it wasn't broken just overfilled.

It's pricy and I'm not sure I'm getting any more for my money.

This is my first humidifier, so I don't have a lot of experience/knowledge about what makes a good humidifier. However, I will say, unlike the other reviewer, mine has not leaked. I've had it for several weeks now and it seems to be working fine. It also has a large reservoir, so it will go 2 or 3 nights without having to refill it. I will agree with the other reviewer's assessment of the instruction manual -it is terrible!! Most of it made very little sense. The remote isn't very useful, either. You can set the humidifier to automatic, either by timer or by the humidity sensor (i.e., set the humidity to a certain percentage, and the humidifier will turn off when it reaches that humidity). I would think it would turn back on when the humidity drops back below the level you set it to, but I think maybe it doesn't (I've looked at it in the morning, and the humidity shows at 63% even though I set it to 65% when I went to sleep). One of the negatives, which may be the same for all humidifiers...it seems to require frequent washing I've used a vinegar/water mixture to rinse it out. Otherwise, a nasty gunk builds up on it. I have been trying to clean it out twice a week. Kind of a pain, but again, maybe it's just part of owning a humidifier. Finally, one of the reasons I bought this humidifier was because it has the dual mist option (either cool or warm mist option). I've only used the warm mist one time. Honestly, I don't think it's worth the price. I think a simple cool mist humidifier would work fine.

Cigar Oasis II

I've had trouble for a long time keeping my cigars in the 60 to 65% humidity range that I prefer. The interior of my humidor measures roughly 45"W x 27"H x 14"D. It's lined in spanish cedar, has two slotted shelves and two hinged doors that open the entire front side. I usually have 10 to 12 boxes on the floor, which is also where the Oasis II sits. The two shelves together hold eight mesh baskets. Each basket holds about 40 cigars, with a couple more boxes on the second shelf. All together I typically have around 600 cigars on hand.

I was using a much smaller Oasis XL Plus. During the winter heating season, it had to be refilled three to four times a week to stay in my target humidity range. The humidor is sealed and gasketed but is not 100% airtight. Tired of constantly refilling the XL Plus, I decided to try the much larger Oasis II. Wow what a difference!

With the Oasis II, I can now go over a month without refilling. It's reservoir is many times larger than the XL Plus. And with its top side reservoir cap, I can easily refill it without having to take it out of the humidor, as I did with the XL Plus to open its top half to refill.

The dual fans are another excellent design feature. One fan runs constantly to insure the moist air circulates evenly throughout the humidor. That eliminates any dead-air or dry spots, and ensures all the cigars are at the same level of humidity. The second fan kicks in only when its sensor tells it to draw more humid air from the reservoir. The remote humidity gauge has large, bright red numerals that I can easily read from across the room. I also have a second electronic humidity gauge with a wireless remote readout that typically reads about 5% lower than the Oasis II. I split the difference for an average of about 63%. Just a tad on the drier side because I prefer the feel that creates, versus 70%, which feels a little damp to me. But if that's what you like, the Oasis II can easily get to 70%+ and stay there.

It's fairly quiet, with a soft hum when nothing else is creating any sound in the room. Its foot print is about the size of two corona boxes, end to end, and a little more than two boxes high. The power cord and the cord for the humidity gauge are both long enough that I didn't need any extensions.

Overall this is a great product. It's a smart design with all the features a real cigar enthusiast wants in a good humidifier for a larger humidor. The Oasis II is a great value for its price and will in turn take excellent care of your smokes as they age over time.

great humidifier. kept my 3000 stick humi within .3 of adjustibel set point. Bought two addtional small dc fans for maximum airflow. Unfortunately, lightning wiped out the microprocesser after 3 weeks. Now using replacement with surge protector.

I have 2 large cabinet humidors, each holding about 1,000 cigars, stored in boxes and in a bank of cedar drawers built into the cabinet. Great cigars get even better with proper aging. Keeping cigars in good condition over time can also eventually correct minor construction problems like a tight roll, but no amount of care or time can fix a bad cigar. Aging cigars requires precise care, and I live in the Washington, DC area, where summers are very humid and winters are dry. Temperature control is fairly easy, but maintaining constant 68-70% relative humidity is a challenge. I use an assortment of passive humidification devices (I like Paradigm passive humidifiers), and in the winter, I add a couple of inexpensive foam or bead-filled humidifier cartridges to compensate for the dry air. When my house gets REALLY dry, I set up a conventional room humidifier outside my cabinets.

One of my cabinets has an interior AC power outlet and one does not. On the middle shelf of the cabinet with AC power, I have had a Cigar Oasis II XL in constant use for more than four years. By the way, I'm going by the picture and the price for reference, as the product is listed here as the "Cigar Oasis II"; it is identical to the "Cigar Oasis II XL" that I own and which is the subject of this review. I have used several different active humidifiers over the years and the Oasis II XL has been the best and most durable of all of these, by far. The Oasis II XL does a very good job of moving air around the cabinet, which is key to keeping cigars fresh while avoiding mold issues, even in the far corners of the cabinet. I do not use any separate fans, but I frequently open up the cabinets and air them out for a few minutes every two weeks or so. Unlike most other active systems, replacement foam bricks for the Cigar Oasis II XL are readily available and inexpensive (you can get one for $10 plus shipping at cigaroasis.com -The Hydra LG replacement cartridge costs anywhere from $27-48). You can get absorbent floral foam cheaply from Amazon and other retailers (be careful; some foam bricks are designed to REPEL moisture and these are useless for humidification), and you can use this foam inside Tupperware with a perforated lid to construct a cheap and effective home-made passive humidifier. However, I've found that the powered machines work much better with a custom-fitted foam brick made for the unit. The Oasis II XL comes with a control unit, connected to the main housing by a long wire, that measures and regulates humidity, but don't depend on the accuracy of the built-in hygrometer. Use a separate calibrated hygrometer instead to figure out the correct setting on the control unit.

The Oasis II XL requires an internal AC outlet for power, which is only present in some large cabinets. The II XL also makes noise. It has two sets of internal fans, one which pumps out moisture and one which operates constantly, regardless of humidity, that moves air around even when additional humidity is not needed. Both fans make enough noise to hear across the room, even with the cabinet door closed. I wouldn't call it "loud"; it's quieter than the smoke-eating air purifier I use when I smoke indoors (yes, Mayor Bloomberg, I am a bad person. I also drink 32-ounce fountain sodas, cook with trans-fats and I manufacture and discard styrofoam as a hobby), but the II XL makes more noise than any other powered humidification unit. It's about the same volume as the internal fan on a Sony Playstation 3 when it gets really hot and kicks into overdrive mode. But the II XL gets the job done and has proven durable, with proper care.

I have tried other powered humidifiers, and some have been better than others. The Humi-Care XG1000 Pro died after only six months. The hygrometer in the control unit began reading wildly different humidity levels and it wouldn't turn on when it was dry, or off when it got too moist. It is complete junk -stay far, far away. The Moist-n-Aire is very powerful, but the dial used to set humidity levels is useless. I set it high enough to turn on, and it never turns itself off, and vice-versa. I still use it in the winter to manually raise the humidity level (like the II XL, it requires an internal AC power outlet), but I have to remember to turn it off after 15 minutes or so, or my cabinet turns into a rainforest. The Hydra LG is better, and it is very quiet, but the hygrometer in the control unit is unreliable and I must make frequent adjustments (as in every day or so) to ensure that humidity levels don't get too high or too low. I use it in the cabinet that does not have an internal AC power outlet because it can be powered through a paper-thin tape-style cord threaded through the cabinet hinge and into an AC power unit outside the cabinet. My Hydra LG has been working for about 2 years so far. It does a decent job distributing moisture. Surprisingly, the worst ones of all have been the smaller Oasis humidifiers, the same brand as the II XL. I owned three different small Oasis models over the years and they ALL broke down within a year. Only the Oasis II XL completely met my expectations. If noise is an issue, or you don't have an AC plug inside your cabinet, try the Hydra LG. It's not as powerful as the II XL, and it only circulates air when humidity is low (unless you buy an additional fan kit), but it's not bad. But with the Hydra LG, you WILL need to adjust the humidity levels VERY often, because the built-in hygrometer does not work consistently. I think the Hydra LG is made by the same company as the Humi-Care XL1000 Pro, so hopefully they have resolved their quality control issues.

If you can live with a little background noise, the Oasis II XL is a good choice, but it does require maintenance. Make sure you remove the foam brick periodically, and check for mold spots. If you see anything, then you need to buy a new brick, or at least treat it with a little bleach if the spot is very small. Just make sure you rinse the brick with distilled water thoroughly to make sure the bleach smell doesn't permeate your cigars, even faintly. Every month or so, wipe down the interior of the chamber that holds the foam brick and the bottom of the section that holds the motor and fans, using a cloth dipped in bleach, before rinsing with another cloth dipped in distilled water. Then dry everything thoroughly.

In the summertime, the challenge is REDUCING the humidity and the II XL's air circulation feature is helpful, as is putting pieces of dry Spanish cedar (which you can gather from used unfinished wooden cigar boxes) to soak up moisture. This is good for fine tuning humidity levels, but if you've got a serious high humidity problem, you should keep a room dehumidifier running near your cabinet. Every summer, I remove the Moist-n-Aire unit completely, and I store most of the Paradigm passive humidifiers in a large cedar cabinet. Bead-style passive humidifiers are supposed to soak up excess humidity in wet weather as well as distributing moisture in dry weather. I've found that this ability is overstated -don't count on it to absorb a lot of moisture. Damp, stagnant air can lead to moldy cigars and, even worse, tobacco beetles. As a cigar smoker, I try not to think about it, but even the best cigars have dormant larvae, which will hatch if the heat and/or humidity get too high. Fortunately, beetles don't migrate between boxes, so if you see telltale pinholes in cigars in one box, just remove that box from your cabinet. There are excellent articles elsewhere online that talk about the treatment of beetle-damaged cigars; sometimes they can be saved.

All of this sounds like a lot more trouble than it is. I've found that, after a few seasons of careful maintenance, a good cabinet humidor will "remember" the correct humidity levels and naturally gravitate toward 68-70%. Of course, it helps to keep the air moving (as with the II XL) and to air out the cabinets once in a while. Keep a few calibrated digital hygrometers within view, and change the position and location of your cigar boxes from time to time. Good luck!

It's a simple design pour the water in the reservoir and let the ultrasonic bust out the cool mist. Adjust your setting from low to high output and sit back and let the room get some humidity. Unfortunately, anywhere from 5-30 minutes into the usage, this device is going to think that there's no water in its tank and turn itself off. You've got to shift it around and let air bubbles out of the bottom for it to start back up again.

You'll continue this process until you've poured the water in the reservoir all over the outside of everything trying to make these bubbles escape so that the unit will resume functioning. I tried running it at low output to high output to see if that affected how long it would last before the bubbles would get stuck and render this thing useless. The output setting had no effect on it.

I returned this item. It simply has a poor design but I like the ultrasonic cool mist. You might hate ultrasonic mists. Even when it worked, the mist is so dense on some models that it immediately falls to the ground around the device and will soak your carpet within an hour. I turned on a ceiling fan though and it spread the mist around the room perfectly. Turning to a lower setting didn't really fix this problem (unlike how it DID fix in the Crane model mentioned next).

Summary: This Hunter unit is quite bad.

Recommendation: The Crane teardrop cool mist humidifier. It works perfectly totally quiet, simple and effective design, and most importantly setting the dial to a lower output allows the vapor to go into the air as opposed to soaking your surroundings. So I don't even need the fan on anymore! Crane is the best ultrasonic cool mist humidifier.

Having read the 5 star reviews, we bought 3 of these one for each bedroom. What a DISASTER! One just stopped working. No visible reason. The second puffed out white stuff and turned our flat screen white (it wiped off, but strange). Third one worked the longest, but there is a red light and a green light to indicate availability of water in the tank and it would be red all the time when full. YOu had to wiggle the tank on its base and it would realize there was water and start working again.

All of them went back to Lowe's.

I love the concept, but think the design of this fan could be better.

Aside from sitting in the shade of a tall tree with a breeze, water misters are the most effective way to stay cool outdoors in the summer. Misters are usually intended for use in dry climates (like Arizona). However, I find that they are still extremely effective in humid climates, if done properly. If you want to be comfortable outdoors in the summer, I recommend looking into getting a misting fan.

My gripe with this fan is due to a sub-optimal design. The fan doesn't move enough air far enough (it spreads the air to the sides instead of throwing a column of air straight ahead). The misters put out too much water (you get soaked) and don't have any way of regulating how much they put out. Each misting nozzle puts out about 1/4 cup of water per minute. The fan comes with 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays 1 cup of water per minute (this WILL soak you!). Read my hacks below to make this fan work better.

PRO's:

Water misting with a breeze is the best way to keep cool in the hot summer

Water misting hose is reasonably long

Electrical cord is reasonably long, but shorter than the hose

Fan is weather resistant, so it can be left outdoors

Misting nozzles are removable, so you can unclog them if they ever get clogged

Oscillating fan spreads out the mist a bit more, so it doesn't soak just one area

CON's:

No way to adjust how much water flows (1 cup of water per minute) (the fan should have come with stoppers to replace the sprayers with, so you can control how many nozzles are firing)

Fan does not move the air far enough, so most of the water it sprays falls within a few feet of the fan

Short stand (only about 3 feet tall)

Fan vertical swivel doesn't have enough degree of movement (can't point it up far enough) and it seems to move in increments (I think it's notched to fall into positions)

Stand wobbles due to loosely fitting parts

Misting nozzles have clips that don't hold onto the fan cover very well

Misting nozzles and hose seem to be delicate (if you accidentally tug on it, it will probably break)

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK BETTER (THIS IS PURELY MY OPINION)

Here are a few hacks that I think will make this fan work better (but it probably voids your warranty). I am not suggesting you try these; these are just my thoughts on what would make it better.

1. Prevent the stand from wobbling:

The stand comes as three pieces that slide into each other. However, the tapered end of each pipe that slides into another is tapered too much, so it wobbles.

To prevent it from wobbling, simply place a toothpick on the tapered end, so it wedges in between the loose pipe parts.

2. Clog 3 of the 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays only 1/4 cup of water per minute:

A 1/4 cup of water per minute is a good amount of mist -it will keep you cool, but not soak you. The idea is to spray a fine mist onto your skin, so the breeze evaporates it away, taking body heat along with it. It should not soak you!

To clog the nozzles, I unscrewed the last three nozzles in the chain of nozzles. Then, I cut a small piece of rubber from a rubber O ring with the diameter just slightly wider than the hollow core of the nozzle. I sanded the tip of the small piece of rubber to a small point, so it's easier to insert into the nozzle shaft. Using pliers, I twisted the piece of rubber into the nozzle's shaft. Twisting makes it easier to force it in, since the rubber will stretch itself thin as you twist it. Note: I put the rubber into the metal nozzle head, not the base it connects to. Then I screwed the nozzle head back into the base. So, the clogged nozzle essentially acts as a stopper. The piece of rubber sticks out of the rear of the nozzle a tiny bit, so I can always remove it if I need to.

3. Position the misting nozzles to get best spray coverage:

Assuming you clogged three of the four nozzles to reduce the amount of water sprayed, your next objective should be to get the water mist to travel as far as possible, so it cools off everything in its path. Normally, you would think that positioning the spraying nozzle at the top of the fan would give you the furthest reach. However, the air coming out of the fan twists as it comes out. So if you put a nozzle at the top of the fan (the 12 o'clock position), the mist gets picked up by the airstream and twists towards the ground (kind of like a curve ball).

Through some trial and error, I found that the best position of the misting nozzle is at the 8 o'clock position on the face of the fan, about half way out from the center. If you put the misting nozzle there, the air stream picks it up and actually projects it upwards before twisting it over and to the right. By the time it completes that loop, the twisting air spiral is no longer twisting, so it simply carries the mist forward. I found this positioning gets the furthest reach.

4. Move the fan blades forward in the housing to get better airflow:

The fan sits inside of a housing that is too wide at the rear and gets narrow at the front. The fan sits inside the wide housing. This causes some of the air to not flow through the opening at the front, but to instead, circle back around through the fan again. In my opinion, the optimal position is such that the outer edge of the fan is close its housing so the air can't bleed away from the edge. You can position the fan blades a little bit forward to reduce some of the air bleeding, but it's still not far enough.

To move the fan blades forward, use a Phillips screw driver to remove the fan cage from the front of the fan. Then, use a small Allen wrench to loosen the screw that locks the fan blade onto the motor shaft. Slide the fan blade forward about an inch (don't go more than that, otherwise the lock screw won't have anything to lock onto). Re-tighten the locking screw to secure the blade onto the motor shaft. Put the fan cage back on with the screws.

This puts the fan a bit closer to the inside of the ring on the cage that's slightly larger than the fan blades, and reducing bleeding from the edge of the fan blade. It should cause the fan to move a little more air.

I hope you find these tips informative. These are just my personal hacks and I doubt they're recommended or supported by the manufacturer -that is, you're on your own if you try these.

We recently had a small family gathering of about 20 people, 10 of whom are kids. A few days before the party, we found out it was going to be in the 90s and humid that day, and wondered what we could do to make being outside more comfortable and not have the kids running in and out of the house to cool down. We started researching misting fans, but by that time, it was too late to order anything online (ordinarily, Amazon is the place I would start), so I ran around town looking for a misting fan. Home Depot, Sam's Club, Target and Menard's all came up empty, then I broke down and went to Wal-Mart. After specifically asking an employee if they had misting fans, being told no, and deciding to look for myself, I found the Holmes Indoor/Outdoor Fan with Misting Kit tucked away in a corner. I got it home, put it together in about 3 minutes and was enjoying the cooling effects of my new purchase in no time. The misting kit easily snaps onto the grates on the fan and the 4 nozzles do a pretty good job of spreading the mist there is about a 10-foot projection of misting/cooling, and the oscillator rotates on a 220 degree arc., which makes the coverage area that much greater. It was also a big hit at the party my mother in law (who is dealing with hot flashes and lives in Alabama) was so impressed, that she wants one for herself. Also, regarding the unfortunate experience of one reviewer who had mist blown back into the fan and it quit working: we left ours outside last night and we got about a 1/4 inch of rain. I turned the fan on this morning and it worked like a charm. The motor is enclosed and the owners manual specifically says it's designed to be kept outdoors (during summer months of course). And while the height of the stand isn't adjustable, you can control the angle of fan "face" itself. So far, so good!

This is a great concept, but the second time we used it the wind blew the mist back into the fan and it immediately stopped working. I let it dry out and it began working again only to fail 2 hours later and I wasn't even using the mist..

This was my second purchase of this fan, my first one is still working fine, but I wanted insurance! In the worst heat of summer, this fan makes the patio area at least 20 degrees cooler, and downright pleasant to be in! The fact that the mister hose cracked and leaked badly after only one season accounts for three stars instead of five. Our solution was to pick up one of those cobra-style misters, attach the garden hose, and put it right in front of the fan, which has held up beautifully in all kinds of weather. If you could buy the mister as a replacement item, it would definitely rate a five.

Not all humidifying crystals are of equal quality, and these are definitely the best.

I personally use them to refill the humidifying tubes I have been using for years. These tend to loose their capacity to hold the liquid after a year or two, and instead of buying new ones (they are not cheap when you factor shipping costs), I empty them and refill them with Madeleine crystals. Works like a charm for me (and my precious cigars).

I am disappointed to have to write that I was shipped the wrong product. I specifically ordered the Madelaine Crystal Clear Humidifier Jar because of its size (as I already have one). The size of the Madelaine jar fits very nicely in my humidor. Unfortunately, the seller shipped my a Xikar humidifier instead. The Xikar is significantly larger than the Madelaine and does not fit in my humidor. So I've wasted my time and money waiting on the Madelaine jar only to get not what I wanted. If the seller wanted to substitute something in my order, at least ask me first before you send me something I don't want.

This is a fantastic humidifier. I have tried at least half a dozen varieties, and this is my favorite. The black plastic cap is easy to pop off for filling with water, but it also stays firmly in place. The cap has plenty of air holes to allow for adequate ventilation so the water and gel can properly maintain your humidor's climate. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.
