AcuRite 613 Indoor Humidity Monitor

AcuRite 613 Indoor Humidity MonitorWell like everyone else says, this product is ok for temperature but leaves a lot to be desired for reading humidity. This being said, with a few mods it works fine as a hygrometer. I added a few more holes with a drill approx 1/8" and now it actually reads humidity quite well. I added a total of 13 holes around the unit, 5 on each side and 3 on the bottom. Now it adjusts the humidity reading every 15-20 seconds and levels out in about 10 minutes and actually reads the right humidity when compared to my dial hygrometer. So this tells me that there is a design flaw with the amount of air flow allowed by the factory vents, thus not allowing the unit to process the volume of air needed to make accurate readings.

ok had it a week and like another reviewer stated the LCD readout has gone blank in a few spots. not dim just not there anymore. Its junk. Off to buy another Hygrometer from someone else.

Bought 2 of these the other day. Opened them up, put in the battery, and they were ready to go. I bought two of them so I could install them in each of my childrens bedrooms so I could tell the range of the temp and humidity each of thier rooms. First I put these next to my house thermostat which has a current temp and humidity displayed. After 1 hour of being in the same room right next to the thermostat both of the Cheney units read exactly what the temp was, and the humidity on both units were the reading the exact same (7 units higher) then my house thermostat. I don't know if my house unit is accurate or not but at least the two Cheney units read the same for temp & humidity. If they read differently than each other than I would say they weren't accurate but since both read the exact same things I give them two thumbs up and agree this is a great buy, especially since it displays the current temp and humidity and displays the daily low/high for each. Great Product!!!! Small, lightweight, has magnet on back to stick to fridge or can use clip to attach it to belt, or anything it can clip to. It also can be placed on a desk, shelf, etc but standing it on end with the attached stilt.

I bought this same hygrometer packaged as Acu-Rite brand from a Mill's Fleet Farm for $9.99 more than a year ago. I've always had it turned on since then, and I've never had to change the batteries. I tested the unit not long after I bought it and again just yesterday (using the NaCl and distilled water test and the Boveda humidipak kit) and after 8 hours the display stabilized at 75% just as it should. I also made a Potassium Carbonate test and it was stable at 43% after ~18hrs. This is great to see from a $10 unit. I've traveled with this product and it has held up through that as well. I've never tested the accuracy of the thermometer, as I mainly bought this instrument to read RH in an instrument (guitar) room, and guitar cases. I've also owned "The Weather Channel" brand weather stations with built in hygrometers that were more than twice the cost of this product, and found them to read more than 10% off when testing.

Maybe I got lucky and happened to buy a accurate unit, but from my experience with this I highly recommend buying yourself one.

PS I have since had relatives buy these units and they were not as accurate as the one I bought, so I guess I really might have just been lucky. The other units seemed to report higher humidity then existed (when RH was 40%, they showed +3-5%, which is considerable). The plus side is that they don't seem to get worse over time, so if you know the unit to be off by a certain amount, you should be able to predict the actual RH.

We use a number of these in our cabinet shop and at job sites. Despite other's complaints about accuracy, we have found them to be quite reasonable, especially considering their low price. If you put ours side by side they will all stabilize to within a few percent of each other. They are small, yet the display is very easy to read. They use only a single AA battery. The only down side is that the 24 hour high and low display is not resettable without taking out the battery, but that's only a down side if you are looking for min/max in a time frame other than 24 hours.

A cap full of salt in a baggie with your hygrometer will give you the plus or minus that your hygrometer is off. That's all you need to know to be accurate with your readings. The salt is always 75%. If your hygrometer reads 82%, then its reading +7. Simply subtract 7 from your hygrometers reading to get the actual humidity. It's really that simple.

Air-O-Swiss U600 Ultrasonic Humidifier

Air-O-Swiss U600 Ultrasonic HumidifierI love this machine! My favorite feature is that it is quiet! All of my previous humidifiers were loud and gurgling. This machine is truly whisper soft! I love the dual directional feature on the top vents. The filter is a closed unit which does not encourage the growth of mildew I have seen on less expensive humidifier model filters. Filters are reasonably priced. The automatic self adjusting on/off humidity feature saves me trips to fill the reservoir. When the humidity is right, it turns off. I use this in the bedroom. I want to get another for my livingroom.

Okay this is the third Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier I've owned. I've always been pleased with this company. I've bought ultrasonic humidifiers from other companies and they've never compared to the quality and performance I've always gotten from Air-O-Swiss.

I bought this one because it's more compact and has actual knobs instead of electronic buttons. I didn't want a lot of bells and whistles, just a basic unit.

It does put out a lot of humidity. No problem there. I usually run it on it's highest settings and it lasts about 8-10 hours. If I put it on it's lower setting it'll run 24 hours but puts out a lot less humidity.

Two issues with the unit.

1) It's hard to get the tank back in place after re-filling. I have to stand and fiddle with it and ultimately kind of slam it in place. Not a huge issue but kind of annoying when I'm ready to go to bed at night and tired.

2) When the water level gets low but not empty, say about an inch and a half or so of water left, the unit begins to turn itself off, then back on, the off, then back on... "click, click, click, click..." It's like it decides it's out of water, then it fills the reservoir back a little, then kicks back on for 30 seconds or so, then runs out again and kicks back off. Now this is annoying. Can't be good for the unit either. I keep mine upstairs in a loft, so when it starts clicking during the day, I have to go upstairs and turn it off as it drives me nuts hearing it click.

If I were to forget to fill it before bed, and it started clicking like this during the night, it would wake me up with the clicking. I am a light sleeper though.

Other than these things, it does what it's supposed to do and it don't take up a lot of space. I think this unit would be good for occasional use, for humidifying a sick kid's room and such, but for every day use I'm going to stick with one of the other units, like the Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier 7135; I've never had ANY problems with that unit (except it's bigger and not very pretty)and have had it for several years.

Buy Air-O-Swiss U600 Ultrasonic Humidifier Now

This is an expensive unit but it got good reviews and I have severe dry eye so I need to sleep in a humid room. Worked great at first. Then (after a short period of time) the beads in the filter started falling into the water unit. Replacement units are expensive and supposed to last several months-NOT! Then the light (green when full and working; red when empty) stopped working. Then it would only work on the highest settings. Then it soaked my floor. Add to all of that, all its little replacement parts are expensive and its very hard to fill. Since I had to fill it every day, that was a pain. I have a cheap Walgreens unit I bought a couple years ago. It just keeps chugging away. Wish I had another just like it instead of this expensive, hard to maintain piece of junk.

I live in NYC and had no problems with white dust since the water here is soft. The only reason I've given 4 out of 5 stars is because i wish it could handle a little more water in tank. It works fine for about 8 hours though.

I had a choice between the pricier all-electronic U650 and this mechanically controlled U600 and went with the U600 because electronic devices tend to fail. The U600 is just wonderful. During the warmer months, like now, I can go about three days between refills. During colder periods I turn the heating unit on. I can still go 24 hours between refills. It is one fine unit and it looks great. The workmanship is without peer and I would purchase the Air-O-Swiss U600 Ultrasonic Humidifier all over again.

Cigars maintain very well in this beautiful humidor. Solidly built and quality craftsmanship. I recommend adding the seasoning packets to help maintain consistent humidity levels.

Really a nice, classy looking humidor. Lots of compliments. However, as far as doing the job of keeping my cigars moist, it is less than average. I don't know enough as to the "why", but the cheap acrylic jars work much better. For dinner parties, I move the ones from the acrylic jars to this prior to serving --folks don't know the difference.

Space-gard And Aprilaire #4740 Aprilaire Relay For 700a/700mI had what I thought was a bad relay. It turned out to be the 24v transformer on my furnace. I changed the relay anyway and it worked great. Exact OEM replacement part for my Aprilaire model 700 humidifier. This was a very good price. Every one else wanted between $15.00 and $25.00. Highly recommend.

4 in 1 1500W watt Quartz Infrared Heater Humidifier

4 in 1 1500W watt Quartz Infrared Heater Humidifier - BlackI really like this heater.

Purchased because this model has a humidifer chamber.

I am not sure if the electric bill will be less with using this versus my HVAC unit but will see soon.

I actually purchased 2 for the downstairs: master bedroom with open bath and one for the living room with open kitchen.

I woudl give it 5 stars but the only thing that I don't like much is the size. It is a bit big to fit in the room i wanted. It does however state the dimensions so just make sure you are confortable with the size. It is not heavy but bulky for the application I wanted. It heats quickly and works great. No complaints on performance.

The product is not good as advertised. It is good only for smaller rooms definitely not good for 1000sqft etc.

Even we try to put it in smaller rooms which about 300 Sqft and does work as expected but it is good when the door is closed. We can not feel the heat more than 5feet on maximum heat.

Travel Glass-Top Humidor (20 Cigars)

Travel Glass-Top HumidorThis product had a few flaws that shouldn't have been problems. First the seal does not pass the dollar bill test on one of the sides of mine. A piece of the wood was a bit loose on the seal as well. Also, there was a sticker on the glass sticking out that was in between the glass and would partially. Careless mistakes, but the seal feels relatively good besides all of those problems and it seems to hold the humidity well also.

Air-O-Swiss U650 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidification System

Air-O-Swiss U650 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidification SystemAfter having an infant addition to our family, I began looking for a humidifier especially with the Winter season fast approaching. I was looking at function, maintenance parts and prices as well as build quality and design. I didn't like how the various humidifiers looked like too quirky, too plastic-looking, too generic.

Then this Air-O-Swiss U650 caught my eye. It had an elegant design and shiny white colour that would fit any contemporary home. It reminded me of our Rabbit Air purifier in both elegant design and price. If I were to add this to our home, it wouldn't be an eye sore.

FEATURES:

1. Digital Display. Easy to read display even from afar to spot check it's current setting.

2. Sensitive Touch Controls. No need to press oddly raised buttons. This one sits flush on the unit for a seamless and simple design.

3. Simple Amber Lighting. No multi-coloured tacky lighting. This reminded me of the old German car lighting that was easy to see and read. At night, you can dim the backlight for a non-annoying soft light.

4. Hygrometer. This is one of the reasons why I chose this unit. Unlike the cheap humidifiers that just keeps on spewing moisture into the air. This unit will alert you of the current humidity level in your room/home. From there you can make a sensible judgement if you still want to introduce more humidity by raising the desired level.

5. Auto Mode with an "Intelligent Temperature Compensation". Humidity levels change when the temperature changes. You can't just expect to keep on maintaining a certain level when it's not advantageous and healthy. By setting the unit to auto mode, it calculates the desired humidity level based on the current temperature. No need to second guess what level you should be at throughout the whole day.

6. Cool/Warm Mist. Both have it's pros and cons depending on the current condition and season. You'd want a warm mist on cooler days and a cool mist on colder days.

THOUGHTS:

Like any humidifier or product that involves water for that matter, you'll need to know how to best maintain the product to keep it functioning as expected and prolong the life of the unit. For this specific Air-O-Swiss humidifier, there are two parts to replace:

The Ion Silver Stick that eliminates bacteria in the water and is expected to be replaced yearly. Expensive, but at least just done annually.

Demineralization Cartridge that needs quarterly replacement depending on the usage of the unit. If you use tap water, this is important to prevent any white dust due to hardened minerals to form in the water. Upon first use, you will need to soak this cartridge in water for 24 hours. The work-around is to use distilled or reverse osmosis water. That way there are no minerals in the water and you won't need this cartridge at all. Of course the cost is now buying distilled water versus buying another part. Choose your poison. If you have a reverse osmosis filter for your home, then that is even better. You save on buying this part and you are helping keep the product in the best shape ever.

Although I'd love to have this unit be more compact and slim, I guess it's necessary to be this bulky to prevent frequent water refilling for at least a day or even days. Where I reside, it rains quite often so there is enough moisture in the air at times. Since the unit is able to read the humidity levels in the air, it won't operate unless needed. This in turn helps eliminate the water tank refills.

If you were to invest in a humidifier, skip the novelty of the others and the guessing game of humidity levels in your home. This will do the job. Quite elegantly, I must add.

My experience with this humidifier is pretty much like the review "Beware" by MrJ.

This product is way overpriced and required more maintenance than I expected. It sure does look good with the high-tech display but that's all it has comparing to other humidifiers that cost many times less. For me, I have a need to use the humidifiers all Winter long every year. So, the decision to purchase this expensive Air-O-Swiss humidifier in hope that it can do better, last longer with less maintenance (because of Demineralization cartridge). Well, I was wrong. It made no difference with or with out the cartridge filter. I get even more white dust from this humidifier than any other humidifier I've used. The design flaw makes it hard to put the water tank back in and it drips a lot when remove it to refill every time. After the purchase of this A-O-S U650, I ended up using it a lot less than other low cost humidifier, which, btw is the Honeywell HWM-950. I like this Honeywell product a lot due to its low cost, easy to clean, and it works just like the A-O-S U650 if not better. It usually goes with "You get what you pay for" but NOT in this case. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AIR-O-SWISS U650 PRODUCT.

Buy Air-O-Swiss U650 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidification System Now

The highlights, which for me justified splurging $200+ on a humidifier, were supposed to be the humidistat, the demineralization system, the antibacterial defenses, and the high capacity.

I ended up disappointed with 3 of those 4 features:

The humidistat doesn't work. It was stuck at 35-40% even when the humidity in the room got to 80%. Total joke. Perhaps I should have tried exchanging the unit, but based on other reviews I concluded this is likely a design defect and not worth the time to keep trying replacements.

The antibacterial system is marketed as "4 band". As an engineer I automatically assumed this meant 4 bands of UV radiation. But I was wrong. The unit does not have a UV lamp at all. What they meant by 4-band and is explained in the manual, is: the pre-heating, the silver sticks, the ultrasonic tech, and special treated plastic together are the 4 things that kill bacteria. Perhaps my fault for not reading the fine print, anyhow, I'm disappointed.

Yes the mist-making capacity is higher than that on cheaper humidifiers, BUT, the extra pumping power comes with severe downsides: 1. The machine does not shoot the mist high enough up in the air, so it tends to make the surface it's sitting on become soaking wet, unless you run it at reduced power. A competitor's cheap unit shoots the mist twice as high. and 2. The tank only lasts 12 hours, that too is unless you turn down the dial.

My goal had been to keep a room at constant humidity 24x7. The lack of a working humidistat coupled with 12-hour capacity at full power actually had the opposite effect of maximizing the range of extremes dry when tank empty and nobody home to refill; too humid when running, due to failure of humidistat to cause automatic shutoff.

The demineralization system worked extremely well. A competitor's cheap unit left a fine white dust everywhere, although it did a better job of keeping the room within a comfortable humidity level.

I purchased this item based on the great reviews I read about it. It worked all of 6 days before dying on me. If I'm lucky, the manufacturer will replace it or refund my money. We'll see. Meanwhile, I bought a replacement filter and replacement ion stick for when I would have had to change them. I'm out that money now.

EDIT: I contacted the manufacturer twice this week via email (I'm military and stationed in Germany, so calling isn't always an option for me), and I have gotten zero responses. Not only do I think the product is terrible, I think Air-O-Swiss's customer service is beyond terrible. I seriously recommend considering something else if you're looking for a humidifier after my experience.

Contrary to popular perception, much of Colorado is as dry as a BONE. We have had mostly drought conditions in the Colorado Springs area for almost 15 years and that made it absolutely necessary to have a really GOOD humidifier. My requirement was complicated by my preference for a humidifier that could produce either warm, or cool mist. That made the quest quite difficult, and to put it simply, to my knowledge, nobody but Air-O-Swiss makes humidifiers that can produce either warm or cool mist. One thing that hasn't changed about Colorado is that it can be both hot and cold on the same day, so you definitely want both kinds of vapor mist, heated, and cool.

I went through two of the Venta Sonic VS205 humidifiers which I bought at an Ace Hardware store and although it produced an abundance of cool mist (even the cheapo's will do this), I never was able to get them to produce warm mist. I've never been able to get the store display moels of the Venta Sonic humidifiers to generate any warm mist, either.

So, off to Bed, Bath, and Beyond where I saw the entire variety of Air-O-Swiss humidifiers. I was like a kid in a candy store. They had all the humidifiers running in a separate section of the store and I could examine each as much as I wanted.

I finally decided to buy this pricy U650 model because of the filtration system, the disinfection feature, and the wide variety of control parameters the users can set. I had a 20% off coupon for Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and that sealed the deal.

I've had this humidifier for four months now and all I can say is that it is simply wonderful. I use it in a room that is roughly 22 feet by 16 feet and it keeps the humidity at exactly the point where I want it. The hygrometer is precise and consistent and literally allows you to set it and forget it without having everything get too damp. You can choose three different levels of vapor output, and on "High" this thing really put out a lot!

Maybe it's more the quality of our tap water in the Colorado Springs but I'm still using the same filter cartridge that came with the humidifier. They tell you to change it every two months, but that may not be necessary unless you live somewhere with really horribly mineralized water, like Phoenix. Just use good, clean water, and keep the humidifier clean (a monitoring system will tell you when to clean the nebulizer gizmo, and that is easy to do). One other thing: you may get a "false positive" that the unit is not working properly, and if that happens, try rapping the cartridge on the side of the sink gently on all parts of the cartridge. This kind of "shakes loose" the granules inside and breaks up any little clumps that may have formed. I have only needed to do this once in four months. Spend the extra money and get something that will make you happy. Life has enough other problems to worry about for you to have to be wheezing around in a powder-dry atmosphere.

One word of caution: don't have "slippery" hands when you refill the tank. The handle is mounted up top in the back of the unit, so after it is filled and you put the cap back on with the cartridge, you must support all the water weight from above on THE SIDE. I use two hands to do this. And I steady and position the bottom of the tank with the left hand while I hold the tank handle securely with the right hand. Cheers!

Cigar Oasis XL Short Refill Cartridge

Cigar Oasis XL Short Refill CartridgeI like this short tank because it fits in the top tray of my humidor. I've had a cigar oasis for over 10 years now and it still works great. Can't have a humidor with a cigar oasis. The cigar oasis keeps my stogs in great condition.

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7146 Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool Mist

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7146 Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool MistThis unit is the original travel/portable humidifier. I shopped around and looked at the several imitators, but decided to go with the Air-O-Swiss name/reputation that I know and love.

This unit is tiny, and comes with a power adapter with both US and European plugs and a soft cloth carry bag.

I use it at McMurdo Station, Antarctica where the average humidity is in the single digits. It puts out less water than my full-size Air-O-Swiss unit at home, but a remarkable amount for a unit this size.

The blue light that others have complained about is fairly bright as most blue LEDs are but it's no brighter than most night-lights, and hasn't bothered my sleep. The blue light switches to a red light when the water runs out... kind of a nice heads-up feature if you don't have the output set high enough to see the "steam" coming from the spout.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to make this purchase again, and I'd replace this unit with the same if needed (unless or until Air-O-Swiss comes out with their own new replacement/upgrade). There are a couple other copies that are less expensive, but I haven't tried them I went with the quality/service that I trusted at the cost of the higher price tag.

PROs: operates very quietly and very compact great for travel and personal use by bedside at home. Bottle neck adapter has two (2) size fittings for use with standard plastic bottle. Adapter is very tight inside bottle's neck so water does not leak out. When turned upside down, metal ball stopper is water tight. Fold out 'feet' to mitigate tipping though it may not be sufficient to prevent tipping with larger bottles eg: one liter bottles. Has variable humidity adjustment which works reasonably well too.

CONs: bottle neck adapter fits into inside of bottle mouth it is not a 'screw on' adapter. A positive about this is that it'll work with standard sized bottles (supports two sizes) however removal and insertion of adapter into bottle neck is VERY tight. Some plastic bottles are very thin walled. Press fitting the adapter can be problematic as bottle's wall may collapse from applied pressure during insertion. Therefore thicker walled plastic is recommended esp. if/when larger bottle is being used. Seniors with limited hand mobility may also find it difficult to manipulate due to tight fit. NOTE: though unit comes with stabilizing pullout feet, filled bottle is simply inserted into receptor there is nothing to 'clamp' adapter and bottle to hold it in place ergo care should be taken as bottle can be knocked off unit easily. The water tight adapter will prevent the water escaping from the bottle however weight from falling bottle can/might cause damage to surrounding objects.

WARNing: Due to relative ease with which unit might tip, use of glass bottle is not recommended. Use in child's room may also not be recommended.

SUM: at price point and intended use, pros out weigh cons and therefore worthwhile purchase. Had adapter come with rubber 'O' rings for easier insertion and if adapter could have been clamped in more securely, it would have deserved 5 stars. CONs however only earns it 4 stars IMHO.

After my government issued ID and money, this amazing gadget is the third key thing I would take on a trip to a dry place. After three miserable trips to Phoenix where my eyes were dry and red and I felt tired and miserable, I brought this portable humidifier for the fourth trip (in as many months). What a difference it makes to sleep with the thing lacing the air with balmy droplets of water. I wish I had had it on other trips to other arid places (including, incidentally, Beijing), but also the many arid places in the Middle East, such as Riyadh. I also plan on taking it to any place cold enough to require forced air heating in winter. I really like shoes, but will leave a pair behind to accommodate this humidifier in my usual complement of carry-on baggage. It's that good!

This review is for the Air-O-Swiss Portable Travel Humdifier (7146).

I bought this unit to help when I travel as I often have troubles with overly dry air. The unit comes with a nice felt carry bag, the nebulizer, the power supply, cleaning brush, and bottle adapter, all of which easily fit in the bag.

I have tried this unit out a few times, and it works well, but, you have to remember that it is a very small unit, and will not turn a large room into a steamy sauna. It is however enough to make a regular sized (300-400 sq foot) hotel room or office comfortable and "take the edge off." It will do about 500 mls in roughly 4-5 hours of time on full output.

It is very quiet, with more noise being made by the occasionaly "burp" of air into the bottle (kind of like a mini water dispenser) than anything else. The mist output is very fine, and evaporates rapidly into the air without leaving a soggy mess beneath it, (though I still wouldn't place it on any important papers).

Assembly is easy, plug the wall wart in to your power source, and then into the back of the unit and flip the legs out on the bottom. Get a small 500ml (17-20oz) water bottle, fill it with water, firmly push/twist the adapter into the open top, and then gently invert onto the unit, flip open the mist output, and turn it on. The output control knob is on the same side as the power cord, which is opposite the mist output.

There's no latches or anything to hold the bottle in place so make sure the unit is on something flat and stable. The adapter has a steel ball valve in it to keep the water from rushing out uncontrolled, but still allow it to "burp" as the unit needs more water.

The only thing I did not like about the unit was that while on it has a *very* bright blue LED on it that lights up the mist output to show you it's working. Unfortunately it lights up the room as well. If you're sensitive to such things, it may make it difficult to sleep as it is really bright, however some black electrical tape or a sharpie could easily fix that issue. The LED will turn red when the unit is out of water, and of course the output will cease.

Pros: Small, relatively lightweight, quiet, very fine mist output.

Cons: Bright LED lighting.

Edit: May 2011

Just came back from a long weekend in Las Vegas where it was very windy and dry. I had set up the unit to run while I was out of the hotel room, and when I came back I could easily notice the humidity in the room when walked in a few hours later. Again, not a steamy sauna, but definitely a noticeable difference from the dry desert air and the air-conditioned casino air. It's currently in my office at work in SD where we are having a very dry and windy few days, and the small hygrometer I have in my office shows about a 10% increase (from ~35% to ~45%) from when I turned it on a couple of hours ago.

Want Air-O-Swiss AOS 7146 Travel Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool Mist Discount?

I bought this for travel about a year ago, but find that I use it at home as well despite having 3 full-size humidifers I could use instead.

I have two full size air-o-swiss ultrasonic humidifiers and a vicks ultrasonic at home. However, this unit is so easy to use and takes up such a tiny bit of space that I have been using it at home as well as traveling. My other big units are just collecting dust in the garage now.

Part of the beauty of this unit is how easy it is to fill you just use one of your empty water bottles. No big heavy container to lug to the sink and hope you don't spill on the way back. In addition, it is super easy to keep clean because it is so tiny. you just need to brush the small chamber where the ultrasonic membrane is located and it comes with a little cleaning brush. The large humidifiers have so many nooks and crannies that they're a real pain to keep clean. Even those with the ionic silver that supposedly retards microbe growth still get gross inside.

I highly recommend this as both a night time at home and travel humidifier. If you live somewhere dry and need a humidifier 24/7,then perhaps it's not the right one for you. But for intermittant use it is perfect!

NOTE: I first tried the similar unit by sunpentown and it had very poor performance so I returned it for this one. Perhaps I just had a bad unit, but based on that experience I cannot recommend the sunpentown unit despite the similar look and size to this one.Sunpentown SU-1051W Travel-Size Personal Humidifier, White

Vicks Advanced Soothing Vapors Waterless Vaporizer

Vicks Advanced Soothing Vapors Waterless VaporizerWe purchased this for our baby's room when she was teething and having trouble sleeping at night. The plug-in itself is great because you can adjust the intensity of the aroma; you can also insert one VapoPad or two, which further controls the intensity. It also has a soft green night light.

The VapoPad has very soothing aromatic vapors: Rosemary Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, and Lavendar Oil. These aromas are all ideal for calming, relaxation, and sleeping. The unit comes with four VapoPads. You can purchase refills when you have used all of them: Vicks Soothing Vapors Replacement Pads.

My husband loves it so much we purchased one for our room!

*It should be noted that this particular Vicks product is not for congestion, but rather for soothing and comfort.

I don't know if this is a glorified air freshener or not but whatever it is my son hasn't made a peep for the last 2 nights we have used it. He was sleeping horribly because of a nasty cold. The night we plugged this in he rolled over, closed his eyes & we didn't hear from him til morning, as well as the next night. Maybe he was feeling better, maybe he was just that exhausted and it's a coincidence but I can't say anything negative about them. Oh... well, the aroma is a bit overwhelming at first but that didn't seem to bother my son. The low setting is high enough.

I really love this product. The amount of light that it gives off is just right, and the scent does work to keep my son snuffle-free at night. I really do hate the smell of the pads that are used, however. I like the smell of menthol that the vaporizer gives off, but the pads themselves smell awfully, and I dread having to change it!

Venta Airwasher Llc 5044536 Lw44 Wht Airwasher

Venta Airwasher Llc 5044536 Lw44 Wht AirwasherI just bought the double unit because I've always loved my first one, but now live in a bigger house (still small by the Venta sq footage. I've discovered that if you use a much bigger Venta than your room needs for the airwashing, it will also humidify to some extent. The only thing I never liked about the system was the expensive accessory fluids you had to buy to "soften" the water and to clean the inevitable deposits. Can you say disgusting? The "sheeting/softening" stuff is like some kind of water soluable oil/kerosene product that will coat the finely ribbed plastic inner wheel and sticks all the gunk that it has taken out of the air and it CANNOT be scrubbed off. So when I used the Venta Airwasher Cleaner, it mostly came off, but I ended up buying way too much of that stuff and washing it more often than they specified because I could not bear to know all that gunk was in there circulating! I used it without the "sheeting agent" and some kind of naturally occurring orange colored algae stuff started appearing after 3 days. Still hard to clean.

Finally, desperately, I discovered was that the water tub unit and the finicky plastic inner wheel could be put into my dishwasher, run at regular warm temperatures (I use a natural powdered dishwashing detergent) and no more gunk and no more orange algae! I run it once a week and other than that the unit works great. I can see all kinds of things in the water that it takes out and then inexpensively and happily, a clean Airwasher without any scrubbing.

Well the company won't like this, and maybe they will say the unit isn't really doing anything, but I feel it does and now I love this unit (and it's smaller older cousin)

I wish it did not cost so much but this is a great design. It both humidifies and cleans the air. There are no filters to get dirty. What more do I need to say?

So far this unit has been flawless, quiet to operate, easy to keep clean and to fill, humidifies well even though our room is much larger than its largest capacity, so despite it being quite expensive like a Mercedes it seems to do everything very very well and user friendly

Honeywell Whole House Fan-Powered Humidifier w/ Installation Kit HE360A1075

Honeywell Whole House Fan-Powered Humidifier w/ Installation Kit HE360A1075I've ran this humidifier for over a year now. Despite frequent water pad changes, cleaning, and careful installation, the thing leaks like a sieve on the bottom seam where the two pieces meet. The water draining mechanism is poorly designed and not tolerant to any change in state from 'brand new'. I would strongly recommend considering a different manufacturer. Otherwise, invest in a plastic bucket to put on the floor under the humidifier. Good lord how could they build such a thing and slap their name on it.

Did not use this product as my duckwork was not large enought to mount unit, seemed to be well made with everything included that you would need to install.

HDC-411 Emerson Humidifier Wick Filter (2 Pack)

HDC-411 Emerson Humidifier Wick FilterI bought these last year for half the price of the HDC-411, but set them aside as soon as I saw that these were NOT Emerson/Essicks HDC-411. Caught with a need to suddenly switch my Emerson humidifier's filters, I've now used them and they STINK!

PROS:

None at all, as in "Golly, these are worthless junk, but at least I save a couple bucks!"

CONS:

Weak won't stand up or support the funnel shroud.

Flimsy not enough material to draw up and hold lots of water the way the Emerson filters work.

Cheaply made instead of layers of fan-fold impressed filter media, this is a cheap stamping of just

a few layers of thin filter paper laminated on each side of thin aluminum core sheets.

Short-lived: I'm used to getting 75-90 days use out of Emerson/Essick HDC-411 filters, but these fail in

JUST TWO WEEKS!! The problem is LACK OF MATERIAL.

Save your money and shell out for the real thing (look closely at the photos and watch out for trick words like "Aftermarket", which often means that the product has NOTHING to do with the product you want!

The filter is very different from the one I have been using. The replacement fits and is working to date. I have yet to determine its performance.

Essick Air ED11 600 Variable-Speed Evaporative Euro-Style Console Humidifier, Light Grey

Essick Air ED11 600 Variable-Speed Evaporative Euro-Style Console Humidifier, Light GreyI have owned an Essick Air unit for several years. It has outlasted all "Sears" brands and models. It is still going strong every heating/dry season.

Secrets to making it work: I use the 1041 wicks. Every two or three weeks, I take the entire unit into the bathroom, pull out the wick and using a hand held shower spray, rinse off the wick thoroughly. This helps lower the mineral build-up and the wick lasts longer. Also I change wicks about every two or three months. So I need about two or three for the heating season.

Yes the so-called digital "humidistat" doesn't seem to work. Simple solution, I just set the unit to a higher humidity than what is displayed. When I want to run the unit, I turn it on. When I want it off, I turn it off. It's just that simple. I do not run it 24x7, I run it when needed, like overnight when the heat comes on.

And I use a separate humidity gauge. This one works wonderfully:

Taylor 1523 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer and Hygrometer

As for noise, I only run it on the 2, 3 or 4 level. Yes, you can crank it up highter, but just like any fan, the higher you set it the louder it gets... and I can hear the TV just fine even when this is running...

It's much easier to carry a bucket of water to this unit to fill it up than to remove water canisters and drag them out and go fill elsewhere. I'm sure you know the type I mean. Sometimes I just use a rinsed out 1-gallon water bottle just to fill it with, just open the hinged panel and pour the water in.

Here's another hint. Don't mount it on the wheels that come with. Put the entire unit on a towel or carpeting scrap. This will also helps if you accidentally spill a bit of water when filling. That also helps keep it quieter and lessen the vibration.

Do not forget the bacteriastat either, but be careful when using this additive, as always.

It is normal for the wick to be about half dry (at the top) and half wet (at the bottom). The entire wick does NOT need to be saturated soaking wet for this to work as the "well" of water is only the few inches at the bottom...

At the end of the season, rinse it out, maybe using a vinegar solution if there is any scale and then disinfect with a mild bleach solution and it's ready to be stored away, waiting for next year.

This is a GREAT humidifier and I've owned one for several years and if I need another one, I'll get another one of these. In the meantime, the one I own is still going strong.

Essick Air 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, D46 720

Essick Air 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, D46 720Overall, this is a great humidifier.

SIZE: The tower shape of the unit makes it perfect for environments where there is more wall space to consume than floor space. It's fairly large: as a point of reference, it rises a little higher than the arms of my living room sofas and it's rectangular shape is about the size of a magazine, plus about 1.5" on each side for the two tanks.

CONTROLS: The digital controls makes it pretty easy to operate. It's a simple, two-button interface with an easy-to-read display. The automatic humidistat can be set from 25-65% (at 10% intervals). The current and desired humidity level are shown side-by-side on the display using indicator bars. When set a desired humidity level, the automatic humidistat will run the unit until the current humidity reading is 10% higher than your preference, then turn it off until the current reading drops to 10% lower than your preference. This is a pretty nice feature it saves power and conserves water so you don't have to refill the reservoirs as frequently. You can also choose to run the unit continuously by not setting a preferred humidity level.

FAN NOISE: There are four fan speeds. The first three speeds are all very quiet and wouldn't be disruptive (or even noticeable) in most settings. The fourth and highest setting is more noticeable, sounding something like a microwave oven but slightly softer and quieter. It might be enough to make you turn up the TV a little while watching the news, but really no worse than that.

DISPLAY: The display also has a green power indicator and a red indicator to let you know when both reservoirs are empty (the unit will stop when this is the case until at least one reservoir is refilled). I did find it kind of odd that the product uses LED bars to display the humidity levels and two-digit numeric readout for the fan speed (even though the highest speed setting is only 4). It almost seems to me that these should be reversed, but that doesn't really reduce the effectiveness of the unit and the interface is still pretty easy to read and use as designed.

SETUP & USE: The unit is fairly easy to setup and maintain. The two wick units and the plastic grill covers that enclose them can be a little cumbersome when snapping them in and out of place. This is not a particularly big problem, since the wick units only need to be replaced at the beginning of each season to avoid mineral buildup.

The two reservoirs, on the other hand, are very easy to remove and replace while the unit is operating. Each is the full height of the unit and about 2 inches thick with a simple click-latch fixing them snugly to the unit's sides. Despite their large and odd shape, they're surprisingly easy to fill even at a small bathroom sink. They each can hold a little more than their rated 1.5 gallons when topped off and the fill-caps hold this amount without leaking. The instructions say that the water level in these tanks is "easily visible" from the sides. The water level can be seen from the sides, but I wouldn't describe it as "easily"; the dark tint makes it pretty difficult to see from any distance. I often have to gently rock the unit a little to find the surface of the water move before I can judge.

When this unit is running continuously at full speed, it can run through both reservoirs twice in a single day (that two times each, or 6 gallons total). Unless your environment is *extremely* dry, I think that's about the max. With more practical and conservative settings, they only need to be filled every 2-4 days, which is a much more relaxed refill schedule to keep.

The unit does work well even for larger, dryer spaces. You'll be able to notice an immediate difference in the air near the humidifier as soon as you start it, and the effect radius grows pretty quickly especially on the highest speed setting.

SUMMARY: All in all, this is a nice multi-room humidifier that looks good, fits easily, works well and is easy to operate with a nice feature set for it's price range.

The first Humidifier I received, did not work properly. I called the "800" listed on the insert if you encountered a problem. Actually a live person answered. I explained the problem, she knew exactly what was wrong, said it was defective, send it back and we'll ship a new one.

I received a new humidifier within a week. Put it together and it works perfectly. You can set the percentage of humidity you would like and the humidifier shuts on and off to keep the humdity at the selected level. I like the fans 4 speeds. Setting number 1& 2 are very quiet, although 3 and 4 are not bad. The humidifier covers 1300 sq feet which is perfect for my entire downstairs. There are two water tanks, I fill them every other day, but the humidifier shuts off and a red light appears when it is out of water.

Buy Essick Air 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, D46 720 Now

I've tried several humidifiers and this one is the easy to use and is easy to fill.

The design makes it very easy to find a place that is out of the way. The high(4) fan speed is noisy, but the 3 speeds below that are quiet. I set the humidity to one below the max with fan speed at 3 and it goes through one tank every 4-5 hours. I also use a Protec cartridge placed in the base of the reservoir and have had no problems with mildew so far. This one is a keeper.

Read Best Reviews of Essick Air 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, D46 720 Here

Having used an ultrasonic humidifier for the past couple of years (before it gave up completely), we wanted to try a different style humidifier. This one seemed to fit the bill.

First off, the build quality is terrible. The quality of the plastic is sub-par. It's brittle, terribly molded and roughly finished. One side of the unit didn't even have the plastic punched out for the latches that hold the filter cover in place. The latches that hold the water tanks in place are imprecise and difficult to operate, leading to difficultly latching and unlatching the tanks. I could see this as an obvious point of failure with repeated use.

Forgiving this, the unit works well to quickly humidify a decent sized room. The fan is quiet and effective at lower settings (1, 2). It gets louder at 3-4 but isn't too loud. The humidity settings are reasonably accurate, tested against a calibrated hygrometer. Two full tanks will keep our large bedroom at ~50% humidity during cold, dry furnace-heated days for around 36 hours.

The tanks might have kept us humidified longer if the unit didn't randomly overflow and leak water all over the floor. I would guess that whatever mechanism is in place to prevent the gravity-fed reservoir from overflowing just isn't built to high enough tolerances to prevent this problem. We tried placing the unit on a baking sheet to contain any small leaks, but even that overflowed.

We will be looking for a different unit once the return process is complete.

Want Essick Air 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, D46 720 Discount?

I purchased (2) of these units from the local Menard's store. I really liked the narrow footprint and quiet operation mode. Unfortunately, they are of poor design and build.

The water bottles side load vertically, and if you don't seat the bottle correctly on the small feed socket, you're going to get a 10" inch puddle. This is managed by learning how to 'quick' set the bottle into the unit. With a little practice one can get the hang of it. Still, I'd recommend you put down a water pan under the unit. I use a boot tray for winter boots.

After about 30 hours, one of the units had a fan failure. The second unit has had a problem with the control panel the switches stopped working. I was able to get it to run on full speed. I returned the first unit to the store within the grace period for a refund, but got stuck with the second unit.

Really, you're taking a big risk buying this model.

Vornado AQS 15 Replacement PreSorb Filter

Vornado AQS 15 Replacement PreSorb FilterSome of HEPA filter units put the carbon behind the HEPA filter, and some put it in front. The Vornado has the carbon as a pre-filter, saving the expensive HEPA portion for particulates. I find I change the carbon filter rather often, and so a four-pack for me is a sensible idea. I absolutely notice when the carbon has loaded with whatever muck is in the air. Then it's time to install a new one, which is not terribly difficult. I'd rather not have the HEPA filter pick up volatile components from the air, so I'd say this pre-filter works very well.

I bought 3 Vornado AQS 15 air puirifiers early in 2003 for my home and office. After almost 10 years of use, they still work great and I've been very happy with them.

So I was dismayed when I opened the latest box of presorb filters and discovered that they are of very poor quality-half the thickness of the presorb filters I'd been getting and transparent!

We're all struggling to survive in a bad economy and I can understand cutting the cost of production, but I was pretty disappointed to see this. I'll probably use up my remaining supplies and go shop for some other brand of air purifier.

Hamilton Beach 05910 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier Replacement Filter for 05518

Hamilton Beach 05910 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier Replacement Filter for 05518We bought our humidifier two months ago and have already gone through two filters. Despite the fact that we change the water in our humidifier daily, the filter quickly start smelling very moldy. It also seem to disintegrate rather quickly.

I'm happy with the Hamilton Beach humidifier, but wish that the filters lasted a little longer.

If you leave the humidifer running after the tank has emptied until the filter is dry dry DRY (i.e., the humidity has dropped down), the filter will last and last. If you don't let it dry, but keep filling the tank with water, the filter gets really skanky really quickly. I learned the hard way until I read one of the reviews on this site. Have run it for over a month now with no smell. Filter is great.

I LOVE this humidifier because I can pop the parts in the dishwasher. I can get it CLEAN easily. Never found another humidifier that you can do this with.

Who cares if the humidistat works exactly? It tells me if the humidity is high or low, and that's all that matters.

It is indeed a BEAR to close the tank tightly, but we run it fine just closing it as tight as we can. Have never had a leakage problem.

Have tried many other kinds, and this does the job the best. Too bad it has been discontinued... I wanted to get one for my 87-year-old parents, since it is the easiest and best I have ever used.

Just a warning to those of you who are like me and aren't the most meticulous keepers of humidifiers: the large filter grows mold very easily. A previous reviewer noted that you should keep the filter wet, but in my experience that just grows mold. I've had to toss 2 filters for that reason. At this point, I've switched to Ultrasonic humidifiers because I'm afraid to use the previously moldy cool mist one (esp with the dusty fan).

We purchased a Hamilton Beach cool mist humidifier for our daughter. We go through one filter/month. The filters are not sold in any locals stores and we can only buy them on Amazon. We usually have to purchase (6) at a time because the filters smell moldy after 3-4 weeks. Now the price has jumped from $6.99/filter to $15/filter. We are disappointed with the product and it's permformance.

The filters last us all winter. The trick for us is to keep it wet...do not let the tray go dry. Vacuum the vents once a week. Our son bought a non-filtered humidifier that left white residue (lime, calcium) on his floor near the unit. This model is worth the [money] per year for that reason.
