Kenmore Humidifier Wick Filter 14909, 14912, E2R

I purchased this replacement filter/wick for our humidifier this year and all I can say is, it doesn't work. First, the construction of the media is very open -which I thought meant that it would function better than our older wicks. Not so. These filters aren't strong enough to support the weight of the air funnel in the humidifier or their own weight -when wet. They also don't wick enough water up into themselves to humidify the air. I ran our humidifier on high for eight hours last night. The humidity level in the house was 20% and the humidifier consumed about two quarts of water. Using our old wicks, the humidifier reservoir would have been almost empty. I'm looking online now trying to find our old wicks.

My advise is although these are initially cheaper they are more expensive in the long run. When I first looked at them I thought they would be a much better design due to the very open material weave. They look like a big honey comb. However, they worked very poorly. The original Kenmore filters would last 1/2 of the winter season before changing. These only functioned for about a week and poorly at that. They do not wick the water well and seem to get clogged very fast. The performance at the end of a week was about the same as the Kenmore filters after a couple of months. After getting wet these are almost impossible to replace without having them fall apart. Poor design & poor performance. Stick with the original or at least something similar.

I will agree with previous comments that the filter has less capacity to wick water up. Our humidifier is not faced with the problem of the "air cone" depressing the filter as it sits on supports that allow the area of the filter itself to remain in it's original shape. The problem is it just doesn't wick up enough water. Don't know what I had before for filters but they were a less 'open'....not so 'holey'...I think they were a folded pleat that was denser, not so openly honeycomb appearing, and they would remain wet enough to allow the humidity to remain at a comfortable level. These filters, even tho they are sitting in an inch of water, are dry to the touch on the upper two thirds of its exposed area. We have a 2 1/2 gallon tank on our Emerson two filter humidifier. With the old filters on dry cold winter days it would need to be filled every 12 hours but it kept the humidity at 50%. With this 'new' type of filter it takes over 24 hours to empty the tank.... meanwhile the humidity drops into the uncomfortable 30's. What to do? I bought six sets (a case) of these filters and find them not up to the task. What can you do to the water to make it more 'wickable' to these filters? I tried a few drops of liquid soap (to decrease the surface tension) but that was not satisfactory.

OK these aren't as thick as the old models, but they work and fit fine, and I received my order the next day. I wasn't able to find the older, thicker filters anywhere, and I've been looking for two years!

BestAir ES12 Kenmore 14911 / Emerson HDC-12 Replacement Wick Filter

This replacement set of filters fits my emerson and essex console humidifier and does a great job of filtering the air. However, it does not wick up much water as the pure paper ones so it defeats the purpose of having a humidifier. Since I replaced these with the stock paper only filter/wicks, I get over twice as much water into the air in 24 hours. I would not recommend these if you want humidity in the air from the humidifier. Look for the accordion paper ones.

I am running 3 humidifiers with these filters. They work well for about the first 2 or so months, but they do not last for a full season. (The OEM filters are more expensive, but I think they last longer.) And yes..., I do know that the instructions say to change them every month, but let's get real how many of us really do that or can afford to change them every month.

My Dylos DC 1100 air monitor goes off the charts with these filters. From < 100 small particle > .5 nm to to over 2000+. That's air quality excellent to poor in a matter of minutes with one of these new filters in a freshly cleaned humidifier. It does not get better with filter age. Note, you will smell this problem when you start up the humidifier, but will stop smelling it after your nose gets used to it. My air quality monitor always picks it up though.

Humidipaks are a wonderful 2 way humidity control system. Although a disposable product they can last over a year if left in a sealed environment and these are often used to calibrate the more expensive digital hygrometers.

Smoke Fresh also gave a good price on these. So why the less than perfect review?

This seller has these listed as individually packaged Humidipaks. While this is technically true, I felt they led me to believe that I was purchasing the ones that are individually wrapped by Broveda in the factory. Those are sealed immediately for long term freshness and come with velcro to fix them to the container. Smoke Fresh simply purchased bulk packages (made for immediate use) and put them in tiny Ziploc baggies with their own version of the company's instruction card.

Missing the Velcro is not a big deal for me, and I think their Ziploc packaging will probably keep these fresh until I need to use them, but if it doesn't, I have no recourse with Broveda. And more importantly, I felt a bit hoodwinked. Only time will tell me if this was a good purchase or not. I hope so, because I love purchasing on Amazon and LOVE supporting the small businesses of America. I just wish a picture of their own packaging would have been used instead of, or in addition to, the stock Broveda picture. I will try and post a customer picture to alleviate this confusion for future purchasers.

We've used these humidipak 62% packets for several years. We get the medium 8 gram ones for our quart sized Ball canning jars. We also have many large two-gallon size italian glass jars that we use the big 40 gram humidipaks with. We have always had positive results using the humidipaks with curing and storage of our products in the jars. I do wish there was a humidipak size available that was between the 8 and 40 gram packets, since the 8 gram packets are still a bit too small for the quart size jars so they don't last as long. Purchasing more so that we can put two 8 gram packets in each quart jar instead. The 40 gram packets for our 2 gallon jars are perfect, they never dry out and the product stays consistent and fresh for long periods, never too dry or moist.

I heard that the original company got bought by another company, and so for our last purchase a month ago, we got the new style humidipaks. They are exactly the same just new packaging (different than the photo in this listing). They now are a 'paper-bag' brown packet with a black and blue logo on the front. I think they look better. We purchased from CigarNet on Amazon last time, and it was fast shipping and the humidipacks were just as they usually are, with individual ziplocks on each. The 40 gram ones are usually in individual factory sealed plastic bags. They never had the velcro like the previous reviewer mentioned, I've never seen them with that before, I guess since we've never purchased directly from Boveda. I can see how the velcro would come in handy though. Would recommend humidipaks if you need to maintain a certain humidity level for curing, cigars, storage, sensitive instruments, etc.

I have been using Humidipak's for a couple of years and have never been dissapointed. Its not very hard to use... 1 take out of clear plastic liner. 2 put herb in air tight container, drop in humidipak, 3 seal container.. done!

That's it, your herbs should stay fresh for about 2 months if sealed properly.

Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier

I received this unit free of charge because my old unit failed AND because I registered that purchase online at the Frigidaire website.

I originally purchased the Frigidaire 50-pint humidifier (Model FDF50S1) in June of 2009 [i.e. the 2009 version of this product] through Amazon.com. The unit worked perfectly for two years then stopped dehumidifying. The unit would power on, one could change the fan speed, but the unit would not dehumidify even though the unit was set to Continuous (CO) and a hyrgrometer showed the basement room to be at 49% humidity.

After contacting a local Frigidaire authorized repairer, I learned these units are considered "throwaway" meaning there are no serviceable parts (except the filter). The units are less expensive to replace than repair, so the manufacturer does not sell any replacement parts (except the filter). My 2009 system had a one year full warranty (long past) and a Years 2-5 "Sealed System" warranty (the sealed refrigeration system).

I called Frigidaire (eventually directed to Electrolux Home Appliances, the actual manufacturers of Frigidaire dehumidifiers), and was expecting to have to pay some cost to get my unit replaced. The rep told me that since the dehumidifier system failed (within the five year warranty) the unit would be replaced with a new 50-pint unit FREE OF CHARGE. Frigidaire arranged for me to pick up a new unit (this unit) at Lowe's at no cost to me.

Since my unit was REGISTERED ONLINE AT FRIGIDAIRE.COM at the time of purchase, I did not have to submit any receipts nor send the old unit back.

Therefore, I have two summary points:

1. These dehumidifiers only last a few years

2. Make sure you register your Frigidaire dehumidifier purchase on-line after you buy. It will make the replacement process alot easier.

FIRST REVIEW (2 stars):

1) The dehumidifier function seems to be quite effective. Our basement was really dank. After a few days, the difference is quite improved.

2) The machine does NOT drain into a hose. I tried all of the suggestions seen in other reviews without success. I was really hoping that I could drain directly into the sump pit, but that is not to be. The water does collect in the tank, so a trip to the basement is required every two days. Not the end of the world, but not as advertised either.

UPDATE Frigidaire is sending me a modification to the dehumidifier. Per their email of today, "We are pleased to announce we now feature a kit that once installed should totally eliminate the drainage issue. We are mailing the kit along with installation instructions direct to your residence. Please allow 7-10 business days."

So, if you are having the drainage problem, you need to contact Frigidaire via their web site and request the kit.

I will let you know if it works...

UPDATE # 2 Frigidaire got the parts to me in 3 days. There is a plug for the drain which leads into the tank, diverting the water. The other part is an adaptation for the threaded drain on the back. Installation of both required less than one minute.

Viola! Water is now coming out of the hose!

Although one must wonder why they don't include the modification kit with the original product package, I'm quite impressed with Frigidaire service.

I use this in my finished basement, and it does an excellent job of keeping it dry. I used it when it was 98 and humid and it did its job. I had to empty it out about two times a day. When the temperature dropped to the 70s and humidity dropped, I emptied it out about once a day. I can be away from my house a couple days at a time, so I hooked up a hose. Initially, it did not drain out of the hose, but instead continued to drain into the bucket. I took off the rear two wheels so it tips back a bit, now it drains through the hose.

If you are considering purchasing this, I would look elsewhere to a product that was designed correctly instead of needing to make an adjustment. If you already purchased this, want to use continuous draining, but do not want to return it, either put some cardboard at the front of the dehumdifier, or take off the rear wheels so it will drain from the hose instead of into the bucket. Hopefully there are no other design errors with this product, since it keeps my basement dry.

The two dehumidifiers I have had running in the basement started staying on longer and longer and producing less and less water even while the humidity was increasing one of them actually stopped producing completely.

When I plugged in the Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier, I was first amazed at the noise level. Practically nil compared to the other two units and also much more airflow with the squirrel-cage fan vs the standard bladed/rotating fans on the others.

I had a full bucket of water within 6 hours! I ran it through two more full bucket-cycles over the next 24 hours before I made the decision to keep it. After that, I put it on a raised platform (3 feet) and connected a hose down to the furnace condensate removal pump. Works like a charm!

A word about the hose connection. I had no issues as other reviews have mentioned. This must be an improved model. All I had to do was unscrew the cap on the outlet and connect a hose. No "kit" was required as some others noted.

It is important to make sure the unit is level or tipped back slightly for the hose drain to work properly as there is no pump in the Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier it is strictly gravity that moves the water out the hose or into the bucket.

Another note regarding this: Most basements have a slope built into the floor! Either towards a standard floor drain or to the outside perimeter. Do yourself a favor and put a level on top of your Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier and shim it level or slightly back and to the right to get the best performance.

Oh! Delivery was 3 days with Prime instead of the normal 2 day Prime delivery. I was notified of this extra day at time of purchase. No big deal for me but it may effect your buying decision.

Update: I have to rescind my comments about not needing a kit for hose drainage. Seems that a "plug" needs to be inserted in the hole that empties into the bucket. Frigidaire is sending me a one of these plugs so I think that all will be fine in the end. I am keeping the five star rating as the customer service was top-notch. They are even sending me an additional kit to "fix" the second Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier I ordered over the weekend (it shipped today). Why don't they send the "kit" with every dehumidifier? I doubt they cost more than a few cents each, but I'm sure they have their reasons. I'll update if the kit fails to fix the issue (but I am confident that won't be necessary).

I've got a Whirlpool dehumidifier that has run ALMOST continuously in my basement for 6 years and a Kenmore dehumidifier that has run pretty much continuously in my garage for 8 years. Throw a little bleach in the water bucket every now and then ... that's all one has to do with these two appliances.

I bought THIS Frigidaire dehumidifier for my bathroom just SIX WEEKS AGO! The electronic control panel has been "sketchy" a couple of times since then but tonight it quit working completely. I should have known better (but, alas, I thought lightning did not strike twice in the same place) because I bought ANOTHER Frigidaire dehumidifier (which I've also reviewed on AMAZON) just a little over a year ago and its electronic control panel ceased to work just a few days after the one year "warranty" expired.

So, I will never buy another Frigidaire or Electrolux (who now owns Frigidaire) product again for as long as I live. Govern yourselves accordingly with regard to these poorly engineered products.

Honeywell HCM-890B - Humidifier - black

It seems to work good ( just got today) but sure is louder than i thought would be, if in same room as TV then you have to turn up TV about 4 or 5 notches

I got this for Xmas after asking for one because my apartment is so dry during the cold winter months. I love that it's black and matches the living room. It does the job and works great. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is noisy to the point where the television has to be turned up to block it out.

I've been looking in stores & on-line for a small humidifier for my small living room. It arrived fast & in white instead of the black in the photo, but the same otherwise. I looked at the box b/4 opening & figured it to be a bit small for a 1 gallon tank... Welp, I got had! It states it's "2 gal output a day", NOT a 2 gallon tank. It is a 1 gallon tank that you must fill 2 times a day!?!? Really? Sadly, I looked back at all the other humidifiers I looked at (close in price)and they were all like this, stating a 'daily output' & not the actual tank size. All I'll say is be aware of that!! I did see these cute, colorful teardrop shaped ones for about $44, only 10 dollars more than I paid for this one. They clearly state a 2 gallon tank. I'm most likely going to keep this one for a few days & see how it works. If I return it, I'm buying a teardrop in pink! I can say for now that the high setting is very loud. I'm all for white noise, but this may be a bit much for most folks. Low is tolerable.

The machine does not leak as so many complained in previous reviews. I suspect they did not have the container on tight. It must be on totally correctly. In addition, I am sure that people are using tap water for the container when the reviewer complains about the filter. I used bottled distilled water. It only costs about 85 cents a gallon and is worth the money for this and any other humidifier. The primary negative about the machine is that it is quite noisy. I use it in my bedroom but not if I am trying to watch TV. It is far too noisy for that. Even the low position is loud. The high position is really loud. For the money, it is not a bad purchase if consider the negatives not relevant.

We initially bought one for our basement to get rid of the mildewy smell. It worked so great that we bought another for our bedroom and then another for our motor home.
