SPT SU-3750 Ultrasonic Penguin-Shaped Humidifier

I went looking for an affordable ultrasonic humidifier because I was tired of noisy fans and the other problems associated with evaporative machines. After a lot of research, I decided to try this one, partly because of its simplicity and partly because of pricing (i.e. not a disaster if it didn't work out). I was a little dubious about the small reservoir size, but it's not a problem at all. To keep a rather large room at ca. 35% in the dead of winter in MN (very dry subzero weather), one fill will last a bit over 24 hours, and of course longer than that in less extreme conditions. It's perfectly simple to fill and clean, and wonderfully quiet--just a steady hum that I barely notice, with occasional little glurps.

So far I've only seen a little white dust on the device itself, but not on nearby surfaces. The vapor seems to circulate best (i.e. up and out into the room) when it's placed well off the floor. On a 30" shelf, the vapor tended to flow downward, so I used a milk crate to raise it up a bit more, and that solved the problem. The only issue I've had with it so far was a fairly strong plastic/chemical smell at the beginning, but that's been diminishing with use. It's a great improvement over any of my previous humidifiers.

I have been using this humidifier for several nights. It is so quiet that you barely know it is on. The mist is very fine and gentle. I have had no problem with leaking or condensation. I have always used distilled water in my humidifiers because we have very hard water in our area. So, I really have no need for an expensive filter. It is super easy to fill and use. I was looking for a very quiet humidifier for a bedroom. I had purchased a different brand (Hunter) humidifier because the box says that it is supposed to be "ultra-quiet." It has a much more forceful motor and puts out quite a bit of vapor, which may be useful in certain circumstances. But it sounds like a big truck motor compared to the quiet little penguin.

This is an excellent product. We own three and have used them for two years now. We even take one with us when we travel. Some of the common problems people have mentioned with this humidifier are easily solved if the unit is used correctly. For problems with the unit running for hours without the water level dropping, you have not properly seated the tank on the base. You need to be sure the white valve inside the tank pops up when the tank is placed on the base. If it is not properly seated the water will not enter the base, thus no mist.

Next, for problems with the mist sinking to the ground, we had this problem before I realized what was happening. I had one unit placed on a thin fabric placemat thinking to protect the wooden nightstand. This only caused a problem. The unit needs to be placed on a completely flat, solid surface, not fabric of any kind. Try it place the unit on a fabric surface and watch the mist fall. Then place it on a solid surface and the mist rises beautifully. I was making a problem where there wasn't one. Without the fabric the unit performed beautifully and the mist has never damaged the beautiful cherrywood surface. With the fabric underneath, the mist sunk and soaked said fabric, causing problems unnecessarily.

Lastly, as to the comments about unit running, all put together properly, but no mist, we also had that issue. This was due to the base of the unit getting overfilled. Not sure how we managed that, because if you seat the tank on the base properly, only the right amount of water passes through. Easily solved, however. I dumped the water from the base, and put the filled tank back on and voila! Misting perfectly again.

This product is super easy to fill, inexpensive, requires no filters, and works GREAT. It does require a little care, as the problems outlined above are all due to human error. If you have hard water it will definitely cause a white dust to form on the unit and possibly surrounding surfaces. This is easily cleaned and hasn't damaged anything we own, but you will have to do the appropriate cleanings as recommended.

The only imperfection we found was that the light on the front to indicate the unit is on burned out quickly on all our units. This was not a problem for me, as I did not care for the bright red light anyway, as these are used in bedrooms at night. But for someone who relies on seeing the light to remember the unit is running, this could be an issue. Since it happened to all three of ours, I suspect it could be a broad issue. But it has no effect on the efficiency of the unit.

The unit is cute but not cutesy. My kids love it, and my husband doesn't mind it. As with anything, you have to teach your children proper care around an appliance. The good thing is that the mist is cool, so no chance of burns. It's also quite sturdy and solid, it's not easy to knock over. We've had them for over two years in three rooms with kids who are now 3 and 7, and never yet had an incident. Not to say it couldn't happen, but with proper care this product should serve you well for a long time. I highly recommend this product.

It works fine for only 20 minutes, and then I have to shake the unit to work again all night long.

I figued out water in the container didn't drop to the working place (making mist) properly. Plenty of water is in the container, but there is not enough water in the mist making part after 20 min later.

After inserting thick paper between the water tank and the main electric part, it works now.

I will drill the unit to make a hole for airflow.

The first DeLonghi 30-pint unit I received from Amazon looked great but did not function properly; the cooling unit that removes water from the air didn't work. I returned the unit for an exchange. (Amazon gets five stars for their excellent return process). The second unit arrived in good condition and worked for about 2 minutes before the compressor in the cooling unit stopped, never to start again. I tested the unit in an 80 degree bathroom at 100 percent humidity and it did not remove a drop of water from the air. The literature with the unit does not provide any help on this type of malfunction, but does give a Web site address ( The Web site had great graphics but no useful information. A note to the company asking if there was any way to solve the problem elicited a recommendation to return the unit.

The DDH30 dehumidifier appears well-made in other respects, but clearly there is a quality control problem with the refrigeration unit, or it is easily damaged during shipment. It appears impossible for a homeowner to open the unit to do any minor repairs, so the only alternative is to return units that don't work. An electrical schematic is located behind the removable water bucket, but isn't very helpful because there isn't any easy way to access the unit's innards. I notice that the controls for the DDH30 are more primitive than the larger models. Perhaps those more sophisticated units are more reliable, but I'm not taking the chance...

In my experience, the DDH30 dehumidifier -like the DeLonghi web site -looks great but isn't very useful.

I purchased it because it had a good name and my apartment had too much moisture. Once I set it up, the dehumidifier did not collect any moisture and runs very loud. We tried it for a few more days, but no moisture was collected. Had to return it. It was somewhat a hassle trying to use the same box to repack it.

I had been a satisfied owner of a DeLonghi dehumidifier that ran for years. When it finally went quit working, I wanted another DeLonghi and ordered this one. It arrived with a broken-off humidstat knob and a bent case, so I had to return it for a replacement. The replacement's water condensation unit didn't work at all (i.e., it didn't extract any water from the air). It also a small, strange ding that looked as if a heavy interior part of the machine had been thrown against the inside of the case so hard it made a reverse dent. I returned this DOA machine too, and asked for yet another replacement, but Amazon said no. Can't blame them.

It looks to me like the real problem is the ridiculously flimsy packaging, which isn't nearly sturdy enough to protect these weighty but somewhat fragile machines during shipment. Because of this, I cannot recommend ordering this item, even though for all I know the machine itself may be excellent if it isn't damaged in shipment.

I finally ended up ordering a different brand from a different vendor, and the difference in the packaging is worth describing. The DeLonghi machines arrived in only the manufacturer's original cardboard box. Inside the box were top and bottom styrofoam pads but just air around the sides of the machine. A couple of shipping straps helped hold the box together. The boxes were torn and gouged and in generally terrible condition on arrival; one looked like it had been taped up extensively to hold it together before it even shipped. But this "other" brand dehumidifier from a different retailer arrived with bubble pack and a second cardboard box around the manufacturer's original box, which itself had styrofoam protecting the machine on top, bottom, AND sides. The outside box had a heavy corner reinforcement splint along each of the four vertical corners and there were five shipping straps holding them in place. These splints extended beyond the top and bottom of the box, which had the effect of creating short legs so that the box itself didn't touch the floor very clever. The outside box had not so much as a dent. Now THAT's how to ship a machine like a dehumidifier, and sure enough, the one inside was cosmetically perfect and has been working just fine for the week since it arrived.

Has worked for years. Wheels need to be stronger(plastic instead of rubber and one fell off) and a little bigger for moving it.

I travel and stay in hotle for my business. In the winter hotel rooms are notoriously dry, I bought this because of the size. I packed it in a small toiletry bag and it fits nicely in my suitcase. Running it at about half on the dial and it ran all night, cranked it up to high and it lasts a couple hours. It's not too loud, others I have had bubbled so loudly I was unable to sleep. The reason for only 4 stars is the light on it. the blue on light is very bright and I like darkness when I sleep. It glowed enough that I could easily see my way around the unfamiliar room without turning on lights. And it's not just a small LED one can put a piece of black tape over, the while unit glows. It doesn't mean I don't like it, it works just fine for what it does.

Bionaire BCM658-U Cool Mist Tower Humidifier with Permanent Filter

I recently bought the model BCM658-U and I didn't expect it to

be able to humidify my 18'X 20'room because of its 1.3 gallon

holding tank. But to my surprise,it easily brought the humidity

level from 28% to my setting of 50% in just a couple of hours,

and it maintained that humidity through the night and well into

the afternoon before I needed to refill the tank. I was really

surprised at how it does a great job and it's small and easy to

set up in a corner somewhere. I didn't like the awkward way that

you have to hold the tank to refill it, but that's a minor complaint

I've owned my Bionaire BCM658 for a year now just after I had bought a Vornado HU1 a few weeks prior. It wasn't until I got the Vornado that it was apparent I needed a 2nd unit (large house), but but the shipping time was so long that I ran out and bought the BCM658 from Home Depot. I should have just paid for faster shipping on a second Vornado. Hindsight is 20-20.

Pros:

1)Good at getting the humidity up goes through the water fast. But no better than my Vornado HU1 which is a far superior in all other respects, and was even less expensive.

2) Water tank bottom filler cap is robust and makes a good seal.

3) Noise level is not bad even on high, as long as you're in a different room. Unit is too loud to even consider using it in a bedroom even on low speed. So the MCM658 is relegated to the kitchen, and I use the quiet Vornado in my bedroom where it's sound doesn't bother me at all.

Cons:

1) Water tank is a ROYAL PAIN to fill a real issue because in dry conditions you'll be doing this at least once every day. It couldn't be a worse design for sitting upside down while you're filling it from the bottom cap, making it very awkward to handle. To add insult to injury, the tank is so tall, it won't fit underneath the faucet in my kitchen sink for a full filling. I can get it about half full that way, and then have to pour in the rest from a jug or something while trying to hold it upright; a task for which 3 hands are definitely needed.

2) Humidifier sensor is a joke. Reads 25% all the time On or Off. When the humidity gets up over 40%, I've caught it reading 26% a time or two.

3) #2 above also makes the automatic humidity setting useless tripe also.

4) The gauge on top that's supposed to tell you when to change filters, always reads in the red 'change' zone. It did that new just out of the box, and still that way after changing to new filters.

5) Absolutely no instructions are available for dissembling the unit to change filters. What I found at Bionaire's site online was the same as what was in the box; changing filters was not addressed in the documentation at all. I managed to figure it out, but only after spending hours carefully disassembling everything in sight, only to find that 95% of the work was unnecessary.

I've not had the problem with the filters loading up with sediment as in other reviews, but I'm using an inexpensive water additive that is effective at preventing that. I also use an antibacterial water additive that keeps the mold & mildew under control. Both those are a must with any evaporative humidifier unless your want to buy TONS of distilled water, and you'll have great biceps after carrying it all from the store into your house .

To Bionaire:

*You might just try have a real person use your products before putting them production and shipping them out. That water tank needs a SERIOUS re-design, and would have be PAINFULLY apparent if any Bionaire person had tried to fill the water tank at their kitchen sink like all the rest of us slogging mortals.

*Leave off the non-functioning gizmo junk that's only intended sucker us into buying it, and put your resultant cost savings into ease of use and functionality.

I have had the unit for about a year.. one needs to understand that when buying a small room filter such as this that

it CANNOT DO A WHOLE HOUSE, otherwise it will run all the time. If you have no whole home humidifier, then you need

to get your expectations in line. This is a good one-room humidifier or supplemental one for a dry area.

The unit has an AUTO humidity level function that actually works. As far as filters are concerned, I dont think

the permanent filter claim is really valid. It is washable but I would buy extras just in case. On low setting

it's fairly quiet.

This unit is great, if you have a standard tub in your house you can refill the water container in about 5 seconds, and the unit keeps a large sized room a good 50% humidity no problem. The container does only hold about a gallon and a half which it goes through daily during the winter, but that just lets you know how well it's working. It really pumps out a good deal of moisture into the air without getting the floor or other items near it wet. This unit provides a really good bang for the buck.

We had two of these machines for one year and the permanent wick in one became temporary as it crumbled. I've tried to contact customer service through their web site and had trouble with the submit button. I put the number of the replacement wick in the discussion and had to take it out as it did not accept numbers. This should be fixed!!!

The unit has worked well and maintained a 50% humidity range in the downstairs. We have a second in a bedroom and that's doing well also. However, we will order 4 replacements once we find them. Securing replacements should be easier.

I purchased this co-sleeper after having my baby in bed with us for two months. Its great for parents who want their babies in their room with them, but rather not have them actually in the bed. I can lay right next to my baby, safely and comfortably and be able to easily reach in to rub or pat his back when he stirs during the night and needs some comforting. I prefer it over a pack n' play because you can secure it to the bed, the one side goes down so its easier to reach in, and its much smaller than a standard size pack n' play. I tried having the bassinet up against the bed in the same manner and it wasn't working out for me so I purchased this co-sleeper. Our bedroom is on the small side and if I had to use something the size of a pack n' play it would have never worked.

Sorry to see some people arguing over the reviews for this product. I think that its the same with anything, different people have different opinions. Whether or not you enjoy this product will be based on the what you expect from the product and your individual needs. I personally don't need to get out of bed to feed my baby with this co-sleeper as some of the other mothers have indicated, but I could see why some other parents would need to. I didn't purchase the product because I thought it would help me from having to get out of bed. I purchased it because I want my baby next to me at night without having him in my bed, and I want to be able to easily reach in and help sooth him if he needs some comforting during the night. Therefore, depending on your needs you may love this product or you may be disappointed.

I only have a few warnings with the Mini Co-sleeper. It is much harder to fold up than one would hope. I have to flip it upside down to get the bottom bars to fold completely. It is also very hard for me to put the one side up and down, my husband and I have both struggled to do it. The last of my complaints are the sheets. I've found cradle size sheets are the closest. You can order the right ones from Arm's Reach if you want to pay 15 dollars each plus shipping.

On a more positive note, the storage space at the bottom is a plus, baby can use it for longer than a small bassinett and nothing beats the convenience of having your baby close to your bed but not in your bed at first.

We had already debated the co-sleeper versus play yard decision & chose a play yard, reasoning that we would use it longer & that it wouldn't be that big a deal to hop out of bed a few steps to grab the baby. Then I had a c-section & my husband ran out to get the co-sleeper after all. We got the mini because I just didn't want to have to crawl all the way to the foot of my bed to get up like I would have to with the full size.

I was just sure this would make night time breastfeeding much easier. (You know: grab the baby, latch her on & lay back & get a few more winks while she nurses.) If you haven't yet had your baby & you share this fantasy: get over it. You won't be laying down to nurse with a brand new baby. And if your baby is like mine (90% on the growth charts) she likely may have out-grown the mini by the time she can nurse successfully laying down.

But I still give this 5 stars because it made life so much easier. We chose to have our baby sleep in our room until 3 months. All those crazy sounds that you're not used to coming over a baby monitor from another room, mean you really won't get any sleep because you'll be trudging up & down the hall all night long, and not just for feedings. Likewise, a crib or play yard (even in the same room) has the problem that you'll be getting up dozens of times a night to check on her. But with the co-sleeper, I just had to turn my head & see that she was fine. It's a lot easier to get back to sleep if you haven't had to get out of bed.

We weren't prepared to commit long-term to co-sleeping or "the family bed." I always knew we would move her to her own room at some point. (It turned out to be 3 months, instead of the 2 I'd originally planned.) As a new, first time parent, I know I got a lot more sleep than I would have with any other set up. (And sleep is soooo precious in those first weeks!) By the time we were ready to move her to her own room, the mini was getting pretty tight, but it was just the right size for our needs & for the period of time we needed it. We didn't need the ability to use it as a play yard later, like the full size can, because we already own a Graco play yard. But, honestly, we've never even used it.

If you are planning to have your baby sleep in your room for 2 to 6 months, the mini co-sleeper will be perfect.

We purchased the Mini Co-Sleeper instead of a bassinet or a cradle because we liked the idea of having our baby right up against the bed.

The sleeper is very sturdy. It has 2 wheels and 2 stationary legs, so it can be mobile when needed, but stationary when baby is in it. It also has a strap that fits underneath your mattress and attaches on the other side, which would secure the sleeper to the bed. We didn't actually use this feature because I wanted to be able to move the sleeper to get in and out of bed without crawling over my husband.

One side can fold down or up depending on whether you want to use the sleeper as a free standing unit or attached to the bed. There is also a storage compartment that is great for storing extra sheets.

My favorite thing about the Mini co-sleeper is the peace of mind it gave me. As a first time mom, I was a little nervous at first. Always wanted to check on the baby to make sure he was ok, hadn't rolled over, etc. This way I could check on him without waking him or my husband.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the cost of extra sheets. Mini Co-Sleeper makes their own extra sheets (one comes with the sleeper but you'll need to buy extras). The special sheets have velcro on the bottom that stick to the bottom of the sleeper to keep it secure in place. The sheets are nice, but they're like $12 14 each which is ridiculous. And they're hard to find (not carried through Amazon). The salesman at the store told me that regular cradle sheets will fit fine. We use the Koala Baby sheets and they are a little big but they do work ok. We put a waterproof mattress pad down and the sheet on top and that seems to give the mattress a little extra cushion. Again, not perfect, but it's still ok.

Overall, I really feel like we made a good choice in getting a co-sleeper over a bassinet or cradle. My son is now 4 months old and has moved into a crib, but we will definitely be saving this for our next child.

We love our mini co-sleeper. It has been great both attached to the bed, and used separately. It is small enough to fit in our tiny 1 bedroom New York apartment. I have a bassinet as well, and much prefer the mini co-sleeper. The manufacturer states that this can be used as a changing table as well, but I would recommend another product if that is what you're buying it for. The mattress area cannot be raised or lowered, and it is far to low to be used as a changing table. In addition, the fabric cannot be removed from the frame making washing very difficult. Despite this I still really like this product and highly recommend it.
